Plus a couple of other oddities, ie. the 9190's reverse zebra stripes and short nose forward on the exNAR 1081. This photo taken from a farm field immediately north of Redwater. They have cut off from the ballast hoppers and are removing a bunch of parked flat cars out of the siding. There was already a bunch of these flats stored on the abandoned portion of the Lac La Biche Sub. at Egremont. These 20 flats will be joining them. When time came to return these flats back into service, this created one of the longest trains I ever witnessed in Redwater as they passed through town headed back to Edmonton.

  1. The stripes on 9190 look to be from the 1961 passenger scheme as the stripes are narrower and the angle is shallower.

  2. Yes, you are correct with the angles, the 9190′s are at 30° and the 9160′s are 45°. The freight F7′s also had the same stripe pattern as the passenger F9′s. The red on those cabs did not end in a straight line at the rear of the cab door, as on the 9160. The 60′s units had the red come down on a slope which went past the cab door and created the angle for the zebra stripes. These units, when paired rear to rear, would then have a reversal of stripe pattern. Myself, I like the next scheme of alternating the stripes on each side. So that no matter how units are put together, all stripes slope the same way. :-)
    I have little to go on as to why the 9190 ended up with this pattern.

  3. There’s probably a very simple reason for the old style stripes on the 9190 (first B unit rebuilt)—the shop likely just applied the reflectorization without repainting the unit! There was also at least one A unit running around with a red cab and black end (9167, if I recall correctly)!

    This link leads to the 9152 (rebuilt from the 9034 – Dated June 1973). Sure looks like the same loco, just renumbered. There are other photos, including up to the 9161, that appear to be just renumbered rebuilds. At some point CN must have committed to updating the units to the 45° zebra stripe and cutting the red off at the cab. As you mentioned, they just never got around to the 9190, making it a neat singular oddity. If you are referring to the rear of the unit being painted black, yes, there was more than 1. The 9160 in this photo has black at the rear. Thanks for your input and interest. :-)

  6. That GMD-1 fits right in, in terms of height. It doesn’t overpower the F units. Besides the red cab at each end. Thanks Steve. :-)
