"Be Safe Out There"!!   Sure appears safety rules are being compromised in this scene, but then, not ever being an employee of the railroads I do not know what rules were in place back in 1975 and perhaps this was a normal procedure; riding the car. I'd like to know when changes took place. Certainly looks dangerous to me, and the 'coupling up' had better be gentle!! It is a misty weekend in North Bay, and a hot one, as I remember. That is the CP yard in the background, the main city downtown in the distance on the right.

  1. This guys definitely braver then me. Amazing what was once common practice back then would be so frowned on today. With no van on the end I guess we can call him FRED. LOL!

  2. That is the saddest joke since Mohammed Ali introduced me to his brother Bowling.

  3. Known as “decorating” this was a common practice for decades in order to pass hand signals to engineer. Not sure what signal both hands on hips signals if anything.
    Note that he is well away from the end of the box car. The engineer will be taking care not to jar him with abrupt movement.

  4. Back in the mid to late sixties, my family camped at s municipal campsite just to the left of the crossing in the distance. The crossing still had a manned elevated tower and the old retiree who manned it invited me up to it every shift for the three days we were there. It was great train-watching…I didn’t have a camera yet. He really didn’t like the ON guys as he was responsible for their crossing out of sight to the right in this photo. I guess they had a habit of never telling him when they were going to the interchange tracks and would cross the road without protection.
