By my timing in life and railway photography, only a short period of Pacific Great Eastern was within reach, mostly from a few visits to North Vancouver yard by public transit from downtown Vancouver. Thus this view of MLW RS-3 yard engine PGE 577 on a crew break at the PGE passenger depot at North Vancouver on Saturday 1972-01-22, just over two months before PGE became British Columbia Railway on 1972-04-01.

PGE 577 was rebuilt to slug BCOL 403 in 1984, and was retired by CN in 2006.

  1. At least you witnessed this.
    Classic, Ken.
Many fans do not even get to see an RS-3, unless it is preserved in a museum somewhere.

  2. Nice. RERA just finished using their RS-3 to get york durham equipment out of uxbridge. It’s headed to Saskachewan soon!

Are there any other RS-3′s still in Canada otherwise?

  3. Two in museums in BC, ex CFI/CZ/CP 8427 at Port Alberni and RSC-3 561 at Squamish.

  4. Nice, are they both operating?

  5. To the best of my knowledge, yes, each is operational.

The 561 is special, as it’s engine hood is from CZ 4097 for the original louvre pattern.
