Canada & Gulf Terminal Railway diesel-electric car 405 is loading passengers on June 25, 1955 at Matane, Quebec for its 36.2 mile trip back to Mont Joli where it connects with CN trains bound for both Montreal and Halifax. 405 had been acquired from the New York Central – the yellow step stool used to assist passengers boarding still bore the NYC logo. Built as a gas-electric car, a Cummins diesel engine was substituted for the gas engine at the C&GT shops. On occasions when the traffic warranted, 405 could haul a lightweight coach. When C&GT passenger service ended in the 1960s, the car found its way back to a tourist railway in the north-eastern United States.  [Geotagged location not exact]

  2. This is one of the sad things about passenger service in Canada. The small town runs always appeared to be handy. Now, inter-city trains are mostly written off as ‘too costly’.

  3. I bought both 405 and its lightweight trailer for tourist train to operate on Toronto Harbour Commission trackage along the wharf and ashbridges bay areas. THC contracted wit CN & CP for all RR freight service. CPR flat out refused to allow it to run.
