Desperate times call for desperate measures. Amtrak 823 kicked the bucket on the Maple Leaf the day before, and a pair of GP38-2s from CSX’s Frontier Yard in Buffalo was summoned to power the train to Toronto. The following day, the pair of CSX units are seen leading the eastbound back towards Buffalo, passing SOR’s Stuart Street yard in Hamilton.

  1. Now that is really nice. I had no idea you caught this train. The joint where I was working was on strike at this time. I elected to get some coffees around ‘train time’ and chased it down to St. Catharines, got a nice shot, and returned to The Line about 1 1/2 hrs later. Of course I forgot the coffee………
Kathy saw this lashup as #98 the night before (from our upstairs window) and still brags about it whenever unusual Niagara Amtrak lashups are mentioned. Women !!!!

  2. This is really cool Rob! CSX to the rescue and all the old RaiLink power in the yard also!

  3. Beats the usual crap eh Arnold? I received a heads up from Bill MacArthur on this one and caught it at Bathurst St. I believe the last car was a former NYC round ended observation.

  4. Before FPON, there was Bill MacArthur! Bill must have been busy the evening before calling everyone he knew, I remember the Bay Street bridge was pretty crowded that morning. Yes, it was a round end observation on the end lettered “West Texas and Buffalo Steamship and Railway Company”

  5. This is awesome. Fat chance this ever happens again.
