how about your most interesting rail fanning Kodachrome* 'capture' ? This one is in my 'top ten' ….

The July 6 Plan: Capture – on Kodachrome - VIA #9 prior to departure at Union, then capture #9 at the Snider diamond** on the Newmarket....

 ….except #9 took an unexpected detour....into Mac Yard !

at CN MacMillan Yard: VIA #9, Toronto section of 'Canadian' , July 6, 1986 Kodachrome by S.Danko

What's interesting:

at Union VIA#9 operating crew attempted to repair leaking steam line between the baggage and first coach....

….after some discussion the stop at Mac was arranged to allow the CN pipefitters to attend to the matter

 July 6 1986: VIA#9 power: 6502 - 6610 - 6612 - 6635 ( FP9A – F9B – F9B – F9B )

VIA#9 and #10 were daily on the Newmarket Subdivision with scheduled passenger stops at Newmarket, Barrie, Orillia, Washago then north of Washago onto the Bala.

  in the background: that CN lashup includes 9523 – 5039 – 95xx – 9449 – 4229 ( GP40-2L(W) / SD40 / GP40-2L(W) / GP40-2L(W) / GP9 )

 * ok, ok, many of you have missed the joy ( & or dismay ) of waiting for that little yellow box...

** Snider diamond replaced, by Metrolinx , with a rail separation – Newmarket over the York Sub – completed 2007ish.

perhaps those in the know may explain the inbound / outbound trackage at the Mac tower ? ....

  1. The tower with the CN on it was the South Control yardmasters spot. The first track next to the tower ( you can see a track on the other side of the caboose) is the Halton inbound for traffic coming from west of Mac Yrd. The track where the CN power sits in York 1 inbound/outbound. The VIA train sits on York 2 inbound/outbound and the track where the men are standing in York 3 inbound/outbound

  2. I’d never have believe this without a picture.. wow

  3. Well doesn’t that just beat all…………

  4. Theres a cool metal spiral staircase in that tower (in addition to a very claustrophobic elevator). Until recently, used to climb up there on my lunch break from the RTC Centre located in the “B Building” where the lawn is in this photo.
