It has been just over a week since the infamous CP derailment and massive explosion and fire at Mavis Rd crossing in Mississauga. An event in which over 200,000 people were evacuated. CP continued to run detours over the CN until the CP Galt Sub was reopened to traffic. These trains were rather hard to catch, but I did get lucky with this one. Westbound CP 4729, 4713 and C&O 3537 are rolling along early morning about to round the curve on approach to Dundas Station. Those who frequented the area back then will recognize the stone retaining wall, and just above it, the track that led up to the Canada Crushed Stone operation, which by this time had been closed about 6 years.

  1. Oooooh yeah this is nice.

  2. Sweet image.

  3. Frig Mooney, 10,000 gold… insane! Great work!!

  4. Thank you, Sir. ‘Frig’ should be referring to going out taking all these pictures in the first place :o ).

  5. 35.944 gold today. :) Well done

  6. Thanks Lad. Slowing down, but still rolling.

  7. Another bit of history recorded for posterity. Thanks Arnold. This looks like 903 with the empty multis on the head end. Lesser priority trains, or any with work between Quebec Street to & including Guelph Jct, took the circuitous route from London to Hamilton & across the joint section to Canpa to go back to CP rails. If those Hamilton routed trains had cars that would not clear the Desjardins Canal bridge, said cars had to be switched out & left at Guelph Jct. On one of those trains, we had to leave some multis at Guelph jct and while switching them out, our portable radios failed necessitating hand signals on a 5500+ ft train. Some cars were near the tail end.
It ended up taking us 15 hours to go from Quebec Street to Toronto Yard via Hamilton.
Then after booking 5 hrs rest we ended up being taxied to Mississauga to relive the original crew on the wreck (big hook) train. We were on that for 4 more days. I have the Super 8 film I took to remember it.

  8. Ronald; a great insight to what transpired very that memorial event. The Mississauga Wreck was the most significant thing that ever happened during my tenure as a railroad buff. All of us who see your commentary I am sure are in full appreciation of your words. Time is quickly going by and, I say with tongue in cheek, when is your book coming out? :o ) CHEERS, AWM

  9. Hi Arnold. My oldest grandson likes to hear my stories, so if I “transfer to another terminal” before I get the book done, maybe he’ll be able to take over.. Thanks for the kind words.

  10. I think we all enjoy your stories. For the time being, transfer is respectfully denied. :o ) I’m going to put to the queue another image from the Wreck days and maybe it will keep your memories flowing.
    Cheers!! AWM
