It was approaching the 'midnight hour' for railroad activity in downtown Niagara Falls. This, I think, was the last local I ever saw rolling thru here; the track was soon to be lifted as CP was pulling out. CP 8221 is seen just crossing touristy Clifton Hill, alongside Victoria Av, on its transfer run from the CN yard back to CP Montrose. There was 10 years difference between this and the CSX photo (#36718) I posted recently, but it would have been neat to imagine a meet between that CSX 8221 and this CP 8221. I wonder if anything like that ever happened along the line here?

  1. Really like this shot

  2. Frig. I was down here probably the next day on a trip with my GF (now wife). I thought i’d come back for trains. How wrong I was – I had no idea it was being ripped out!

  3. Fantastic, always wanted a shot here.

  4. You know….sometimes I’ve liked a photo without commenting on it when it was posted. This one came up again in the ‘Best Photos ‘ feed…and I now sit and wonder why i didn’t comment on it?

I have family that live in the Falls. They used to live in St. Catharines years ago, but would be the tour guides and one trip took us for breakfast. I don’t recall where it was, but it was along Victoria Steet by Clifton Hill. Late 80s, might’ve been 1990. The only memory I have is sitting at the front of the window, looking out and hoping to see a train go by.

Back then, I never knew the history of the Michigan Central, which by then became referred as the Canada Southern more frequently. Sad that the city hasn’t paid a tribute to the railway at Clifton.

  5. Ya know what was the toughest part about getting an image of a passing train in the Falls was? Trying to find a place to park.
At Clifton Hill I sometimes double parked and pi**ed off a line of cars. The heck with them. They couldn’t move anyway with the gates down.
