On an extremely windy overcast miserable hallowe'en day in which Mother Nature suffered from an extensive lack of bladder control; I went out after learning CN #422 was on the way with 11 new units (From Erie,PA) in tow en route to Toronto. I thought I had missed the train, so sat down near Ontario St in Beamsville, the opposing signal was red and I figured I'd just park in the pouring rain until the light went green for the USA-bound Amtrak. Convenient that I tore out the door only to find the scanner batteries had died :o( .......It became Amtrak time and the light was still red!!! So something coming!! And at 0942 the gates went down and along she came........I scurried out in the monsoon and caught CN 5612, 5470, 2425, 2843, 2840, 2848, 2837, 2846, 2841, 2839, 2845, 2842, 2847 and 2844 with a reported 146 cars. Quite the treat. The traffic jam on the Queezy (QEW) quickly put an end to any idea of driving to Bayview for another shot. This is the first digital image I have submitted to RP.ca!!!! Lawdy. An old dawg is learning new tricks.

  1. Neat catch, and a good story to boot !

  2. Geez, what a nice catch! That must have taken a lot of lucky horseshoes in the pockets…

  3. Nice shot Arnold, I guess they will go straight out west and we won’t see them agin till they are very dirty :)

  4. Being way behind the times, how long ago did they single track that area?

  5. Dave: Not exactly sure, but when I moved from St. Kitts to Grimsby in late 1999 they were just relocating the crossing gates at Nelles Rd in Grimsby; so single tracking between Jordan, mile 16.6 and Nelles Rd., Grimsby, mile 26.8; probably took place in late 1998/early 1999.

  6. And I thought this wouldn’t be repeated again – after seeing your shot of this in 2002 (Where the heck was I?) – http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=6133

    Now I’m jealous.. again ;)

  7. Lucky of the Mooney, ‘eh Arnold? Great photo. I would’ve been in school when this sucker went by…all the good stuff seems to happen that way down here in Niagara for me, haha.

  8. Lots of days when my luck reeks though. This was very fortunate, and I have seen a grand total of two CN trains with 14 units up front over the years. I like being out weekdays when most others are ‘busy’.

  9. Little did I know, a month after writing that comment I would have caught an almost identical lashup…sweet
