Rather colourful lashup on the head end of this Toronto-bound #521. Appropriate, because engineer Gordie Rivers was not long off retirement, and so he posed (pre-arranged) for his 'official' portrait at the Mile 4 switch at the entrance to the long-gone Montrose Yard. Power is CP 5591, HATX 402, HLCX 3111, CP 4206, 5939, and HATX 401.

  1. Thanks Arnold for your photograph. The personal content in particular is terrific. Wow! even the number boards are colourful on the 5591. :-D

  2. No safety vest :(
Is there a way to punish this man retroactively ?
If he is retired, perhaps CP management can find a way to revoke his pension ?
Or perhaps CP management can find ways to harass his children and force his family to leave the country.
Managers… you can never have enough of them.

  3. How times have changed, A. Medora!! To really see the lack of “safety” gear, check out an old photo (#7693)by going to the map and Westfield Beach, NB(By St. John) and see what looks more like a gang of schoolkids doing track maintenance! Times have REALLY changed. Good thing this isn’t a digital image. You might see if he has an undone shoelace. :o )

  4. #1014: Gordie exemplified a class railroad employee back then. He was warm, kind, and accepted with appreciation the idea that so many of us out there were enthusiastic buffs. I thank you for your heartfelt comment.

  5. Gord was a class act. He passed away a few years ago not long after retirement as I recall.

  6. I had heard something of that too, Ron; but wasn’t 100% sure. What a shame. Very likeable guy. As you said, ‘Class act’.
