While working a temporary assignment based at Ashcroft, a wander around the maintenance-of-way office revealed the concrete octagon base for the final water tower location there, seen here viewed compass northward (timetable east) on Tuesday 2007-06-05, slightly cleared of loose ballast.

  1. And to think there were water towers everywhere along the railroads at one time. Even the old section shacks and phone boxes are a rarity these days.

  2. A surprising number of octagonal concrete water tower bases survive, well worth snooping around likely spots, probably not worth the work to remove them unless the area is needed for something else.

  3. Last trip I made was a couple years ago now, but here in deep SW Ontario, a full concrete base still stood at Bothwell Station, on the Windsor Sub.
