With Wisconsin Central being absorbed into CN, it was becoming increasingly difficult to see WC paint any more, so it was nice to see one on the lead of #390. Trailing unit is CN 5291. An added bonus was the WC 7638 is in Operation Lifesaver paint. 
The transformation of the area for the third track going in for GO services is apparent on the extreme left, one can just make out a construction laneway as work is under way to shore up the terrain at waters' edge.

  1. Damn. This is my unicorn. I tried to get a WC leader twice and failed

    The first time simply missed it, was very inexperienced and didn’t go to the right place..

    The second time I was east of Sarnia with the WC leader coming, just as it came my camera decided to fail (had to send it in) and could not get it to work, watched it go by and got no shot.

    Never happened again since then – this was probably one of those 2 occasions.

  2. What a catch! I only got WC units trailing during that time, then they seemed to disappear off the face of the Earth (or just repainted). This is even a rare one leading. There were definitely a number of gems that went through on CN during this time.

    Interestingly, 2006 was the year when they took down the searchlights and upgraded to the triple track. I got pictures of this scene in October with the triple track in place. Construction must have moved quickly after this day.

  3. I’m trying to remember, but I think the only other time I got one leading was on #328 at Woodstock. Yeah, hard to find.

    And…Mr. Host…don’t get me started on digital cameras that fail to work. UGH. (this was shot with film)

  4. Awesome! I shot both WC Operation Lifesaver SD45’s in Ontario but never leading. The other one has been preserved sadly this one was cut up :(

  5. I did see the other one too, Marcus. It was second unit on a train coming down the hill at mile 2 Dundas, but so early I could not get a sharp photo….barely daybreak. Never saw it again. :o (

  6. Are you sure this is 2006? The Third track went into service around Feb/March 2007

  7. Snake I believe it’s correct – I have plenty of photos showing the progression of construction, in fact i have photos of trains using the new third (Southmost track) on 9/26/2006 through Bayview Jct.

Steve, I just looked my photos up…The third track went into service circa March 2007 – I have a pic on a dreary day of a EB freight – the first doing 15 mph on it…the track was in at least Jan 2007 but not in use…Jan 2007 pics show rusty rails needed alignment. The pic date of Aug 2006 here – the embankment isn’t even shored up for a third track yet.

  9. The wall is in. Once the wall was in things progressed rapidly. The third track was down and loads of ballast being spread by Sept 2nd. When it was first used, I am not sure, but certainly by Mar 2007 as you say, Mr. Snake. The land was shored up ready for third track by Aug 25th.
