That afternoon I was already rushing around trying to get things packed and organized for a pending dinner with friends north of Toronto in Aurora when a certain someone called. He explained that GEXR 3054 is now back to Southern Pacific 3054. With the previously mentioned commitment pressing there was no time for the who, what, how and why questions to be asked over the phone. It was quite simply load the family in the car and hopefully intersect this train on the way to Aurora. Hearing scanner chatter of 431 switching east of Kithchener meant the train was likely at Shantz working the Parrish & Heimbecker (P&H) facility. So we headed east, and upon arrival there was little time to waste as 431 was already slowly departing after completing its work. After frantically working my way up the well worn path to the tracks above and with literally seconds to work with, I was able to photograph 3054 with it's newly applied SP logo. As a side note, I found out after that when the crew on 432 reported for duty that morning at Stratford, the SP paint was still wet, so it had been very recently done overnight. As well, this would become the last GEXR 431 I ever photographed as the changeover back to CN was less than a week away.

  1. Nice Jason and love the caption! I can totally relate. Literally, sometimes you have less than a half hour to get your shots and move on. As a side note, and I posted about this on here, when this unit first arrived on GEXR, it had the Southern Pacific lettering on the sides…it looked sharp!

  2. The network worked well that day, AJS let me know about this thing and word spread quick from there. I managed 3 shots this day, should have gone to P&H but IIRC I had plans like you :)

  3. Was the SP on the hood when the Southern Pacific lattering was on the sides? Very nice catch!

  4. @Kevin Flood- Thanks man. Yes, we have to make the most of our time whenever life allows it. I remember seeing your photo of 3054 or then 9392 when it first arrived. I don’t believe I ever photographed it with the SP speed lettering on the hood, but you are right it looked good still.

@Stephen C. Host- Yes it worked great that day. Others were waiting for it at Kitchener after as well. I would have liked to chase it as well but had to part ways from here.

@BradKetchen- When this unit first arrived on GEXR, it still had the SP letting on its sides and was numbered 9392 and it just had the plain bloody nose with no lettering on it.

  5. Gexr’s heritage moment was the most epic and short lived. Well, now you might find it on BPRR.

  6. Glad everyone was able to catch it before it left!
