I don't have a whole lot of pictures of the big M's running out their last miles. But while sitting in Milton next to the CN bridge over CP I was lucky enough to have this sight for sore eyes come around the corner. I'm, am still of the opinion that 1990-1997 was the greatest time for railroading in North America. The power was almost always all at the front, trains were plentiful, DPU's didn't exist, someone around the tracks wasn't viewed as a national security threat, release forms got you free tours of the yard, but mostly, that anything might be leading coming around the corner.

  1. Great image, Mr. Brook !!! A classic. I also shot a lot of the old MLWs near the end, but almost all working on the old CP/D&H. This 4570 is one of the very few beasts that I actually got invited to see the cab.

  2. Very nice. I’m sure this also sounded really good too!

The cab!! I’ve been in a few in my time, the way I see it, once you’ve been in one model you’ve pretty much seen them all (ie: GP9, SD40-2, etc)

I was able to get in the cab of a few locos on the WNYP, the last bastion of big M locomotives near here, pleased I did. I called the WNYP it OSR on Steroids but in truth it was a CP/CN Museum as the cab sure hadn’t changed since god knows when. While I did see these in action as a kid I didn’t appreciate what they were nor did I know the difference until my 20′s.

    Thanks for sharing this gem.

  3. I have to agree with you David, the 90′s were an awesome time. Nice photo as well.
