About awmooney

Retired early due to health problems after 42 years in grocery business; started watching trains in the early 70s and took up photography in 1974 in Niagara, and of course Bayview Jct.. Graduated to a half decent camera a year later; the D&H is my favourite road (by far) but have done a fair amount of photography in Canada. As far as cameras go, suffered thru endless problems with the old Miranda series after ditching the Kodak 110 when I found I really was interested in this hobby and it wasn't just a passing fancy. Used Pentax series for a number of years before going to Mamiya 645 Mediums as well as a variety of old 4x5 Speed Graphics. Currently still shoot film with the 645s and an RB. Digital? Someday, maybe. Home is Grimsby, Ontario. Railpictures.ca is the first Site I have contributed to.

I don't know what it is like at this spot since the Hwy 6 bridge got widened, but years ago a favourite spot was sitting on a ledge under the bridge; scanner in hand, and keeping out of the hot sun. That was the case when this westbound approached. Being mid-July I would imagine even the shade and the breeze that blew thru was barely enough to keep me cool........but I am ready when along comes CP 4731 and 4744 with a 58 car train. I like the stripes on the leader, but I kinda wish the 4744 was leading. Sure beats today's GEs anyway.

Seen here by the base of the at-the-time new CN Tower, MLW S-13 #8519 moves around a cut of passenger coaches.
When the passenger maintenance centre was at Spadina before relocating to Willowbrook; these locomotives were instrumental in keeping the passenger equipment organized.

I've not posted a snowy winter scene in a while, so here goes. Thankfully the Bayview Jct "parking lot" was plowed out enabling me to at least get up into location. This is mid-afternoon, around 1500 hrs and the westbound VIA with CN 3114 and VIA 6621 is about to ascend the long Copetown Hill on its way to London/Sarnia.
Yes. It was bitter and the sun didn't help matters all that much.

Leading is one of 4 SD60F locomotives manufactured in 1985 but designated as SD50AF when built. The 9900-9903 group was changed to 5500-5503 in 1989 and became the first four of that SD60F series 5500-5563 completed in 1989, now all off the roster. The CN 9902 finished life going to K&K Recycle in 2018.
I had a hard time catching any of these "SD50AF" units. This image at Bayview Jct as the train starts up the Dundas Sub was shot with the Speed Graphic, 100 ISO colour film at 200 F4.7. Trailing units are 9544 and 9414.

Awh, geez. If it isn't one thing or another that slows down the CP as they go about their daily business. We were almost thinking to give up ...... but after 3 hours? No, wait it out. So finally as the sun is behind the clouds and the day is winding down, about 1915 hrs the 'catch of the day' finally shows up. CP 8114, 8129, and six x-KCS, all marked for Progress Rail (PRLX) in tow...3927, 3947, 3951, 3918, 3926 and 3964. Followed it down to Newman Rd (Dundas) just because it was on the way home, but dusk had settled in by then.

Just what I like. A beautiful late spring day and the sun is out at the same time I am. Wandered down to Fort Erie and was rewarded by the N&W transfer coming over from the USA; a rather long train as you can see some of the train on 'the other side'. Behind the lead unit 2707 is sister 2706. I was somewhat puzzled by the "Extra" flags on this one; perhaps it was not a regular transfer. Too long ago. I fergit.

Nice morning shot of Cartier GP9 #59, along with #51 awaiting next assignment. This unit went on to become Essex Terminal's #108; as seen in a really nice image by Geoff Elliot (RP #11581) As I post this I find it so hard to believe it has been over 40 years since I have been to Cartier. But I say that about a lot of places..........

A decidedly "un-Canadian" scene. Yet this is in Fort Erie down the yard toward CN Duff; as departing trio of Conrail GP38s, 7936, 7939 and 7937 heading toward the International Bridge happen by the NS transfer which has just arrived behind NS 8558 and 8619. The C39-8 I always considered looked like some sort of ugly beast, and I have heard the crews didn't think a whole lot of them either. Total of 161 built (years 1984-1987), on NS at least they are all retired.

"Trillium" wasn't a name I had heard of back in 1999 in regards to this railroad. It was started up in 1997 and in 1999 still referred to as the Port Colborne Harbour Railroad. Back in 1979 the town decided to come up with some sort of celebratory times and settled on "Canal Days" which was held over the Governor Simcoe holiday weekend (Civic holiday to many of you) in honour of 150 years of the first Welland Canal. The group behind this, the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum, promoted festivities for all ages and emphasized masted ships and boat rides. In time they decided to try a train ride as well. It was not much of a ride, and as a result a short lived experiment. Trains ran up and down the line a few miles using PCHR C-425 #6101 at the south end and S-1 #308 at the other, with 5 coaches brought in from NY State for the riders.
These days, the line is now GIO (Trillium), the 6101 went back to the USA in 2001 and the 308 departed stateside as well in 2003.
With covid fading away somewhat, I would expect Canal Days to be held once again first weekend in August 2022 with much fanfare and some great scenes for the Boatnerds, but only a miniature rubber tire train for the kiddies.
This scene is of the train crossing Elm St at the north end of town, the only place I could access to get a good curve showing both units.

Over the years on this site I thought I had dug out most of the decent shots taken from the Canada Crushed Stone conveyor overhang at Dundas sub mile 4; but here is another one. It was a fun spot (but dangerous) while it lasted. From high up here is VIA 6524 and 6623 running an eastbound passenger. I think it is a bit long to be #84; I have already posted #70 a while back, and it looks too early by the sun angle to be #72. So just guessing. It is a beautiful early spring day, last day of March in 1982, and in the distance one can see the old Dundas station; not long before a fire scorched it in late 1984 and its eventually demise a few years later.
As far as I can recall after this day of photos I did not go back into the conveyor again, even though it was not dismantled until early 1986. Too risky.

Eastbound CP train heading for the US border. I was impressed the power consisted of 3 straight SD40s; of which only 65 were made for CP. Power is CP 5500, 5514 and 5552 with a short train. I was so surprised to see the lead unit was the first built by the GM Diesel Division back in 1965 that I lost track of the wig-wag signal and shot this when the "stop" wigged when I wanted it to wag. But still, a photo for the history book. The CP 5500 was deemed Cultural Property Designation in 2003 and eventually ended up at the Revelstoke Heritage Railway Society museum in that BC town, where it is on display out back of the museum building.
The unusual wig-wag signal used to be near the corner of Crowland and Biggar Rds in rural Niagara Falls.

Rather nice looking old C&O camp (boarding) car sitting in the once sprawling C&O yard in St. Thomas. It has been suggested to me this could have been a Bunk, Kitchen & Diner car, an x-troop transport? When wandering the yard many years ago I could not help but notice that attractive green paint. And so grabbed this shot.

I can't believe it has been more than 9 years since I first posted a colour shot of this train working its' way up Ferguson Ave in downtown Hamilton (#6836). After the initial shot, I turned and ran along the sidewalk in hopes of getting to my 4x5 Speed Graphic, which was on a tripod waiting. I lined up the shot, popped the cover on the film plate and just barely got this one off. (Didn't have a chance for a slide as well) This looks pretty good.
For me, great memories of that classic A-B-A combination on the Nanticoke steel train #725 while it lasted. In this image is CN 9169, 9196 and 9172.

I'm down by the PCHR (now GIO-Trillium) connector mile 18 or so just west of the Welland canal; and the westbound #321 is rolling by with Chessie B&O 6210 and CSX 6852. I didn't see many of these 'stealth' type paints along this line. On the right, distant, you can see a CN local on the way.

Nice clean image of Bradford station as it looked back in the late '70s. I've not been over to visit this building in many years, but I suspect it looks the same as it ever did, yet this photo, as of today, was taken a week short of 45 years ago. These days it is served by Metrolinx.

Marcus Stevens recently posted a "high line" image at Lake Louise; a nice afternoon shot (#48203) and that had me dig up an image from a visit there last fall. The RMRX, behind 8018 and 8911 was to pick up around 0845hrs passengers who had overnighted at Lake Louise.
Seemed like a decent plan, so we are out of our hotel in time. But there is a CP eastbound blocking the way at the station. So, we grabbed a few shots of CP 8887 in and out of morning sun and a half hour or so later the bus came into the Lake Louise station lot, people got off and went over looking for the Rocky Mountain train. It was a chilly morning, and the crowd huddled around waiting for the RMRtour to show up; but as it is single track east of the station, the RMR train had to pull up on the highline to let the CP eastbound go. Then, after it departed, back up and roll down in front of the station so passengers could board. All this took more than an hour. I don't know why, but it made me chuckle that the "red carpet" was rolled out for the people to board the train in 'elegance' I guess you could call it.
To me, it is just another train ride, although extravagant, I must admit, but as most passengers, not on time. :o)
The image is of the CP leaving, CP 8529 end of train unit; and the sunrise was right over the Rocky Mountaineer engines, making for a rather tough image.

A trio of GP40-2L(W) locomotives with their train under strict control are nearing the bottom of the long grade from Copetown, and have a couple of miles to go to Bayview Jct. Due to thick foliage, this angle over York Road is no longer available and is another reminder that trees are growing now everywhere along the RoW that they once didn't. Such the ominous sky over the hillside; a storm is imminent. No mistaking that. CN 9663, 9598 and 9546 is the power up front, back in the day that these Widebodies dominated the CN landscape.

Southbound CP 4743 with 4719 stopped at Parry Sound CP station in order to set off a couple of tank cars in the diminutive yard for local industry. Times have changed. These days, there not only is no longer a 'yard' so to speak, there is only one mainline track as well. The beautiful station hangs in though, and has been repurposed.
Last I knew it was a commercial concern; an 'Art Gallery" business.

Dreary old train on a dreary old winters' day. Amtrak E9A units 404 and 405 look like they are on their last legs as they rumble eastward past the Mile Marker 2. So they are that close to the International Bridge. I wondered about two units on such a short train. Reliability issues? Or were they not turned for the return trip from Windsor?

As I look over this image from the downtown Toronto area from many years ago, I can't help but wonder. Where are all the tall buildings??? GO 701 westbound with 907 on the other end down by Lower Jarvis St. Tail end of a CN freight on the right.
