This is the very first year of the Goderich-Exeter Railroad operations, having started up 8 months earlier in April. Two of the company's 4 GP9s are seen here rolling over the first of two overpasses in Holmesville with a train for Stratford. Checking a couple of other images I took, I see that GEXR 177 and 180 have about 25 salt cars and a couple of flatcars of Champion Roadgraders, another long gone business in this suffering province. (Volvo bought the Goderich plant in 1997 and they too bailed out in 2008.) Also in 2008, the #177 was scrapped, and the #180 was moved to Michigan Southern.

  1. This is very nice, the best early GEXR pic I’ve seen yet on here. Great work.

Keep them coming – there’s a few early GEXR fans on this site – and I know they will love this series.

  2. Still my favourite GEXR units. Nice catch!

  3. Lovely units.

Maybe some day we can vote in good Gov’t and we’ll see some manufacturing return?

  4. Hate to say it, Mike; but the best we can do is vote in a government that will at least give us some stability. This downward spiral is frightening.

  5. This is so awesome, love their old scheme.

  6. Agreed. This is a great image of classic GEXR. Matching paint schemes to boot. Also note the amber flashing light on the roof of the cab.

  7. Thanks guys, for your complimentary opinions. :o ) I’ll see what else I can dig up.
