Possibly, this photo will give some light to Jacob's comment on truck bearings. This a converted baggage car in work train service, parked in the Redwater siding. You can see the equipment gets a lot of love. Every bearing is different. SKF on the left, Timken in the middle and Hyatt on the right. Also, when I zoom in on the original photo, the Timken is made in England and the Hyatt in Canada. A couple of weeks later, converted baggage car 70781 was parked in the siding. It had 2 Hyatt's left and centre, with a freight roller bearing on the right. Sure looked like a freight bearing with the rounded corner triangle and 3 bolts within (instead of the covers with names as seen in the photo above). Seems with these older cars, if it fits, put it on and she's good to go. :-)

All those cars of grain heading off to be turned into loaves of bread, slices of pizza, tasty cookies . . . There are a few unusual cars in the train. A couple of plug door boxcars and several of the gray coloured CN hoppers make for a little variety from the solid Gov't hopper consists. Up at the front, the 4323 and 4352 are taking the extra home. I see in my notes, I was enjoying my newly purchased film winder the last couple of days. What a difference that made. Shot with Kodak 100asa print film at mile 27.7.

The 8136 is going to pass through a clear alley at CP Clover Bar yard as it heads out to Fort Saskatchewan. The yard job will have a long wait as this train is very long. Both railroads have enjoyed business in the Fort area for many many years. For the last several years, using train length as an indicator, business is doing very well.

The extra is coming around the corner that will take it past the hamlet of Coronado. Today it is just a string of empty fuel tanks and cab 79836 at the back as the crew returns to Edmonton. I've said it numerous times, love the way ex-NAR units set up interesting unit combinations that appear to be all facing in the same direction.

The point man is bringing the units and a cut of cars across 17th street and then onto the Camrose Sub. They are being pulled out of the CN-CP exchange yard located by the Suncor refinery. The crew will make a few more stops going south before running around their train and head north and back to Clover Bar. Sporty blue bell on the 1438.

The 5580, 5503 and 5589 are going to tie into 50 loads of sulphur as soon as they clear the trestle. By the time they reach main street in Redwater (2.5 miles from here), progress will be down to less than 15mph. It will be another couple of miles until the units have the train back up to speed. Caboose 79392 was at the rear. Also, what looks to be brake smoke is dust from freshly applied and spread ballast. This photo was taken with Kodachrome 25 at 1/500th. I made no entry for aperture, which must have been close to wide open (50mm, f/1.4). Imagine being track side using iso25, could present challenges.

One of the more unusual cars that went up north to Waterways. According to the 1986 CTG, combine 7210 was built in 1919 by CC&F. I saw it twice the summer before and this once in 1986. The 1987 CTG shows it being retired/stored. The only VIA car that I recall or can find in my notes that was part of the Muskeg Mixed consist. Looking through the windows, it appears it is only being used to move large objects in its final days. The complete train consisted of the 4236 and 4345 up front, various freight cars, with CN baggage's 7855 and 7856, CN caboose 79101, VIA combine 7210 and CN coach 4977 at the rear. A piece of the 4977 can be seen, it is of 1924 vintage and spent time in Montreal commuter service. Photo taken with Kodak 100asa print film in the evening.

Could not resist taking a picture of this pair. The 9151 is parked for whatever reason. The 1508 has its stacks capped, I believe it has just arrived. Possibly waiting to be setup to go to work. It did work the City yard downtown for awhile. The 5362 has just been started and is about to go into the shop. Taken on the east side of the shops, using Ektachrome film.

At the very northeast corner of Redwater, the tail end cars of the Muskeg Mixed are leaving town and heading down to the river. That is CN coach 5095 and baggage 7857. After conversion, I came to term it a bagboose. :-) You can see mile post 30 up on the pole. It is 20:00 and in less than 15 minutes I will be at Egremont for a photo of the head end. Standing at the north end of the connecting track, the units for the Muskeg Mixed are about to enter the Lac La Biche Sub. and will continue to Waterways. Having just crossed Hwy. 28, the engineer has widened the throttle a little and soon will be up to speed. Egremont is less than a mile north down the track. A few minutes earlier I was in Redwater taking photos of the tail end cars. Please see neighbouring thumbnail.

The 4330, 4350 and 4351 have 40 loaded hoppers traveling at a good clip as they return to Edmonton on a -25°C morning. This is the regular crew, they headed out Friday, March 7th, as 584 with 24 hoppers and 4 grain boxes, all empty. Returning as an extra on Saturday, passing through just before lunch typically. This photo is at 11:00 as the train approaches Coronado. Assigned caboose 79836 spent many years going 3 times a week to eastern Alberta and back.

CN 5517 is approaching mile 24.4 with several loads of grain on top of the 30+ sulphur loads further back. Cab 79841 is at the rear. I posted a photo recently of the 5517 from May/85 still in the old CN noodle and black paint. Just over a year later, the new paint is spot on for the sun and blue sky. Taken at approx. 16:00.

No. 91 is just leaving the Coronado Sub. and entering the south end of the connecting track which will take it to the grade crossing with Hwy. 28 and then connect with the Lac La Biche Sub. Very few 91's ran with 2 units and for some reason they have all the equipment out today too. Baggage cars 7856, 7855 and coaches 4977, 5099 with cab 79101 bringing up the rear. Hiding behind baggage 7856 is a black CN call box and the Kerensky siding sign, the actual siding is out of sight to the left of the train. The switch with the broom will be changed in the next little while to a spring switch so that traffic returning home from the Coronado Sub. can trail through.

Grain loads on the way home to Edmonton on a sunny Saturday afternoon. These 3 units worked together for several trips, which was great. Every number board has my favourite character used for the numerals. Photo taken at mile 24.4.

Long story to this one of a kind photo. I did not like to bring my regular camera with me when shopping. I found a nice second hand German made 110 camera that would easily fit in a cubby hole of the car dashboard. Which lead to this one photo I have of a freight passing through downtown Fort Saskatchewan. Right in front of the Fort Mall :-). It has just finished honking for the first 4 crossings and is getting ready for the 5th. No doubt, residents gave a huge sigh of relief when the line was moved out of town in 1987. The 4302 is followed by the 9177 and 9176 as they slowly head east on the way to Vermilion. I'm happy that little strip of film sat nice in the film holder for the scanner. Wow, just drove down here on Google, this whole area has changed considerably. Pretty sure this is 1985 or possibly summer of 86.

Mild February weather has brought out the work train to continue with track re-hab. In the usual position next to the caboose is Jordan Spreader 50971. Could not resist a roster shot with the sun shining in clear sky. Photo taken at Kerensky, the siding is in the foreground, 9:00 in the morning.

The 9156 only passed through town a few times that I saw. Of the few pictures taken, this trailing photo should do the trick for those that like to model them. Still early in the year for 1987. The 9156, and a few weeks later, the 9169 are the last of the other F units that will drive by. As spring ended the 9167 started a long monotonous run as the only remaining A unit. Taken at a farm crossing West of Radway using Konica print film.

The headend crew has just finished spotting some hoppers at the elevators and has returned back to their train. In minutes they were on the way eastward, with many more similar stops to be made before days end. Kodak 100asa print film and a 50mm lens.

584 heading out at 11:15, passing a farm crossing near mile 37. Cab 79425 on the tailend today, which is unusual as they typically use assigned Cab 79836.
