A late return of the Mixed train in daytime (about 8 hours late here) produced a grand opportunity to catch these elephants in sunshine. The tailend cars consisted of Baggage 7855, Coach 5099 and the old NAR Comboose 78966. Photo taken at mile 27.7 at 9:30.

Photo of No.91 at mile 26.6 as it heads north to Fort McMurray. The known facts are that it is a Monday and just after lunch, the actual week is the question. Beginning of March will be close. Konica 100asa print film and a 50mm lens.

With a controlled glide the 5584 descends the hill from Kerensky with a loaded train and in just a few more car lengths, the valley will roar as the units pass over the Redwater river trestle and start to climb up the other side. Sure looks to be April and pretty confident it is 1987. Shot with a Canon f/4 200mm and 100asa print film.

A photo taken by my Dad while working on a box car that was left BO'd in a siding somewhere in the Edmonton area. Now that the wheel has been rolled down the ramp onto the track, how did they get it over to the track with the truck? :-)

In addition to grain loads picked up, a long string of ballast empties are headed home with the grain extra on a sunny end of the week evening. The train is coming around the bend which leads to Coronado, a couple of miles further west. This being a print negative, which I generally kept poor records of, and from other sightings of the 4603 & 9167 as a pair in Sept. 1988, I'm sure this photo is from the same time frame. (GP38 renumbering happened over the summer of 1988 too.)

An interesting ABA set with the 4216 leading, 9198 and 4217 at the rear. The unit train has obviously stopped, possibly in Lac La Biche, and picked up a few grain hoppers on the way home. The recently applied ballast is waiting for the little army of machines to come spread and shake it into place. Photo taken at the east crossing of the hamlet of Coronado.

Extra 1082 is leaving Gibbons at 11:05 after stopping to pickup a few cars. It is a longish S bend as they head southwest from Gibbons, which, approx. 2 miles from here, the route will become straight south to St. Paul Jct and connect with the Vegreville Sub. With luck they will be on the shop track by 12:30.

I'm pretty sure this is 2 shifts meeting. The carknocker will be ending his shift with a train inspection and the crew of the 2853 is just getting started on their trip to Wainwright at 6:30 this morning. Funny how when you're the crew just heading out, you always want to be the other crew that has their shift coming to end. Such is the life of work around the clock. Still, as much as I hated nights, it was the best time to be there as you generally had the place to yourself. Good smear games at coffee too.

These little superintendent cars always made me go into a wishful dream. How cool it would be to own one and travel the rails in these converted cabs. From what I was able to find out about them, there was only 3 made. Two stationed in B.C. and one in Alberta (in their initial years). They seem to be of a little higher grade of construction than the converted boxcars made into a similar type car with platform and brake wheel only at one end. Today, 61202 is headed for Fort McMurray, where it will stay for some several days before returning.

As the headend brakeman walks back to the units after coupling on, I took a moment to catch a shot of the view out of town. By the look of it, you would think we had a lot of trees growing in the area. One of my most fav GP9's, the 4602.

Often seen lately on these pages as the 4774, shown here before renumbering, with 28 loads of grain and a rare visitor to the Coronado Sub. the 4283. Both units are actually rare to this area. This being the only time I photo'd the 5574 and the last time taking photos of the 4283. The 4283 in the previous week had gone through town on 2 separate trains.

I don't mind the looks of the ECO-20's. In the Edmonton area, I have found them a tough customer to get a nice photo of. Did not get any photos in 2020 and previous to that is slim pickens. CP keeps a well stocked stable of GP-38's for here. The 2246 is headed down to do some switching in the CP-CN interchange yard located right next to the Suncor refinery.

The loads are lifted, coupled back on and it is so long Gibbons as the snow flakes fly. The crews likely last stop now will be Calder yard. This unusual elephant style happened quite frequently with so many of the ex-NAR GMD-1's and GP-9's working the Coronado Sub.

After spending the early morning hours making the journey north from Mirror, the 4614 is parked on the main waiting for traffic to clear on the Wainwright Sub. before continuing on to Walker yard.

First place I set up, clouds. Drove for a second try and got lucky. They have 35 loaded sulphur hoppers behind the units and it won't be much longer till Calder and on the shop track. Photo taken just west of Redwater.

I was watching the CN crew pick up the blue gon out of AltaSteel (rusty red building in the background) and then get a light to come north towards me. Just as they head north this CP truck drives up and becomes part of the scene. You just cannot believe how things work out sometimes.
