![Gliding downgrade from the town of Redwater, empty sulphur buggies are headed north to be refilled. Once the units have passed over the trestle, which is immediately to photo left, the throttle will be upped a few notches to climb the hill to Kerensky. At Kerensky, they will leave the Coronado Sub., taking the connecting track to the Lac La Biche Sub. and the distant destination of Waterways. It will return 2 evenings later with nearly 50 loads and the 4602 added in for extra help.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/CN-4350-200x150.jpg)

![A photo not to be admired for its beauty, heavy overcast and almost 20:00, the units were in heavy shadow. Thus, a little photo work was required to bring out the subject. What is shown in the photo and I saw several times going to and from Jasper is this typical use of the F unit "beetles". With 2 trains meeting just east of Edson, both making use of these B units, all in one frame. The consist on the left is made up of 5093, 5000, 9106 and 5335. The right has the 5418, SD50F and F7Aum, (cannot make out the unit numbers).](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/CN-Beetles-200x150.jpg)

![A late return home for the Muskeg Mixed finds it passing through the hamlet of Coronado at 13:30 rather than the dark hours in the middle of the night. The comboose is ex-NAR and has a history that goes back to the turn of the previous century (18 to 1900's). Up front the consist was made up of the 4319, 9172 and 4285.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Comboose-200x150.jpg)

![I had a little fun with CN - CP in the same photo this morning. This is the Fort Sask. switcher finally on the move after waiting for a couple of CN trains to clear the diamond at Clover Bar. I have not been at the tracks for a few weeks and what a difference today. 6 trains, all in good morning light, in an hour and half. I have not seen this much action in awhile. I must thank M. Berry for his recent comment that they are bringing CN GE barns back into service. It got me thinking, if it is busy there (Quebec) it could be busy again here, it is. :-)](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/CP-8907-200x150.jpg)

![I stopped in at the downtown city yard on a Saturday morning knowing that the majority of crews here have the weekend off. I surely expected to find several switch engines and that was certainly the case. This is the west leads goat parked in its usual spot by the yard office which is just out of the picture to the right. They will be one of the few jobs working today. The usual routine for them will be switching the yard until around lunch and then after lunch take a transfer to the NAR and bring one back for interchange with the CPR. The CP yard at that time is behind me in this picture (south side 104th ave.). The only thing today remaining of both railroads in downtown is the CN tower, which even that is no longer owned by CN. Behind the black Procor tank, parked on the shop track, the 1263, 1264, 1291 and 1507 are idling and waiting for their next call to duty. During my time at CN, the typical goats at the city yard will have been a thirteen hundred for the west lead and on the shop track there will have been the 7100 number series SW8's with the occasional SW900 in the 7200 series. Checking the CNRHA, the 1508 only has 5 years to go from this date before retirement and it seems there was no second life for this unit.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/CN-1508-200x150.jpg)

![This is a scene that I have not seen trackside in several years. One fellow pounding in spikes that have lifted, the other tightening the bolts on rail joints. Plus a little flat car in tow with a rail jack as a load. Same speeder as the one that I just posted a while back and I still cannot make out the number (for those who may inquire).](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/CN-Speeder-200x150.jpg)

![The grain extra has just passed through Redwater and will make a quick stop in Gibbons to pickup a string of empty flats. This will be the last bit of work they will do, Edmonton is only a short distance away. By this late in the 1988 summer, having pure GP9's for power was becoming uncommon. The GP38's had become the goto unit for heading up trains.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/CN-4290-200x150.jpg)

![Looking through the collection today and I found this speeder to go with the other recent posts of these little track motor cars. This older style is the one that I am most familiar with. It is chasing behind a work train of sidedumps about a half mile ahead of it. The speaker on the cab top was real handy for listening to what, if any, rail traffic was in the area. It helped to plan where to go. Quite often, in downtown Redwater, as the section men brought the speeders out onto the track in the morning, you could do a little eavesdropping.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/CN-Speeder-200x150.jpg)

![On the way to tend the many industries located around Scotford. These trains are typically pretty long and this one is of considerable size. CP does a good business northeast of Edmonton. The work days are long and I would imagine the crews enjoy the bonus of overtime hours and the extra pay. The occurrence of foreign units has become somewhat rare in 2020. What was common in 2018 is not so this summer.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/UP-5540-200x150.jpg)

![An elevator scene from the end of June, 1983. I took photos of all 3 elevators, with this being the best and of most interest. Every elevator has a single car spotted, with each one being different. Elevator 1, to the right in this photo, has a Trudeau hopper, elevator 3 has a grain box. The filling spout has been left in for the night on this CN hopper, with 2 more bays to fill tomorrow. The large elevators of today, with the long lines of cars being run through the loading dock, seem to have lost a little of the human and farm factor. In only a few years after this picture was taken, the lineups of farm trucks waiting to unload will be gone from Redwater. As well as the farmers and their families that would make a day of visiting and shopping at this busy time.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/CN-369606-200x150.jpg)

![Having finished switching on the south side of the yard, the 4512 has come over to the north track and is heading back to continue working. I had a look at CPRDIESELROSTER.COM and the 4512 in November 2011 was still in the Milwaukee Road paint scheme, although lettered for the SOO. I sure do enjoy the new shade of red the CP uses vs the shade on the 3105 and the older GE's. The dashed white line on the frame looks better too.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/CP-4512-200x150.jpg)

![The Thursday grain extra is on the way to Edmonton and passing over the Redwater river trestle for this photograph. The 4345 is still wearing the Polar Bear from its time on the GSLR. I believe that the yellow showing on the dynamic brake grills is also the yellow paint scheme applied for a short time while working the GSLR. The great part of having a safety cab paired with an old GP9, you get 2 longhoods forward when the older unit leads. The 4345 was rebuilt to the 4126 in 1989. It did not enjoy a long second life as it was involved in an accident in 1997 and retired (info from CNRHA).](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/CN-4345-200x150.jpg)

![Of the numerous times that I have passed by Kinder Morgan, this is the one instance where their switcher was off the shop track and in a place where taking a photo had no obstructions in the way. The fence being the worst for getting in the picture. Only a handful of times have I seen the 9022 started up and making a move. On this day it is pulling a small string of tanks, 10 or so, and working hard at the task. I cannot imagine when or how extra cars become available. The unit trains sure do seem to remain intact during their stay at the loading facility. RSSX 9022 is a former SW9, it appears that it went for rebuilding sometime in 2014. There are several internet pictures from 2015 showing it in transit to Edmonton. As already mentioned, it has spent most of those 5 years sitting out in the back 40, not the best second life scenario.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/RSSX-9022-200x150.jpg)

![I was looking through fellow contributor Kevin Floods photos and found a good match for a 'then and now' comparison. The subject is the 4704. In my picture, taken during the last week of August, 1986 in downtown Redwater, the 4704 is wearing its original number 5504 and the black CN noodle scheme. It is working the grain train and will be peddling cars from between Gibbons to end of track at Lindbergh. Its companion is the 5500. Both units at this time are 14 years old, having been built in 1972. They show typical signs of wear and tear, rust under the battery box, droopy double 00's in the rear numberboard, paint chips on the longhood etc. A plain set of GP38-2's. I love the early covered hoppers just behind the 5500. In the near future, the 5504 will go for repainting into zebra stripes as I will it photo it in Feb./87 with a new paint job and will be re-numbered 4704 in 1988. In Kevin's photo, taken on March 12th, 2019 (see the comment column for a link to his picture), it appears the 4704 has seen a paint job not to long ago in the past. A number of changes through the 34 years from the Redwater picture are evident. Bell and horns have been moved, flashing light in former bell location, remote control antennas on cab roof, vent on the top of shorthood nose, plus many other smaller changes. The 4704 will be turning 48 this year and should easily make it to the half century mark in 2022. This is quite an accomplishment, it feels like there is a message in there somewhere. It must be a difficult engineering task to build something so it lasts just long enough, but, not to long. Otherwise, build things that last forever and railroad companies don't come back to buy more. I think we have a Pink Energizer Bunny in the GP38, they just keep going and going . . . .](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/CN-5504-200x150.jpg)

![The summer of fun and variety, 2 years ago was truly a great time. The 4614 and 2126 are on the way to Mirror with a mixed bag of freight. Even AltaSteel (the billowing dust behind the units) was a going concern, which by no surprise, in the last few weeks is a very quiet building. If rumors prove true, the red, white and blue will be gone in the near future. I will miss all of the paint schemes that were worn by the PGE and BCR.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/CN-4614-200x150.jpg)

They interlock at Clover Bar with the CN and their signal to the diamond is just to the right of the pole.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/CN-3102-200x150.jpg)

![The 5706 and 5731 came off of the Camrose Sub. and took the west leg of the wye at Bretville Jct. After clearing the west switch, they stopped and waited for a signal to shove east through the Jct. and down the Wainwright Sub. In this photo, they are shoving the 25+ empty tanks around the curve that will lead to Clover Bar and a holding track. Shortly, a yard crew will finish the task of delivery to the waiting customer. It was a treat catching these 2 SD75's in good sun.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/CN-5706b-200x150.jpg)
