![With the opening ceremony over, the last train is headed back to the Fort for further activities at the station. ![The "Last Train Through the Fort" ceremony was advertised in our local papers for Sept.8th/87. An event I was not going to miss. Here is CN 4005 parked at the Fort station with VIA coach 5474 and CN business car 93. After all the dignitaries and CN officials are boarded, they will head east to the new bridge over the North Sask. river and officially open the new rail by-pass.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/CN-4005-1-200x150.jpg)

![The "Last Train Through the Fort" is on the way to the new bridge, loaded with many people. After today this portion of the Veg. Sub. will become an industrial spur line. The many rail crossings in downtown will be torn up and to the delight of many Fort residents, no more horn blowing. Just as I was getting all set up for photos here, an Edmonton Journal photographer approached me and asked if I minded his taking photos of my son and I for the paper. I said sure, be my guest, and as the train passed we had our pictures taken. Next day, checked the paper and there were our smiling faces for the "Last Train Through the Fort" article. The oddest thing that has ever happened to me when out train chasing.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/CN-4005-2-200x150.jpg)

![This train headed out on Monday as 836, the jet fuel train, taking loaded tanks to the air force base at Cold Lake. Here it is on Tuesday, returning home as an extra, with grain loads and empty tanks. The consist has the 4609 Ft. McMurray, 4611 Barrhead and the 4345. The ex-NAR units give a twist to elephant style, the 4345 being a long hood forward unit. I have written in my notes that the 4609 was either not running or in idle as it went by, just the rear 2 were pulling. Photo taken almost 3 miles west of Redwater at 12:30.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/CN-4609-200x150.jpg)

![2 types of units that are favoured by many of us, but, not often seen together. In particular as an ABA set. Plus a couple of other oddities, ie. the 9190's reverse zebra stripes and short nose forward on the exNAR 1081. This photo taken from a farm field immediately north of Redwater. They have cut off from the ballast hoppers and are removing a bunch of parked flat cars out of the siding. There was already a bunch of these flats stored on the abandoned portion of the Lac La Biche Sub. at Egremont. These 20 flats will be joining them. When time came to return these flats back into service, this created one of the longest trains I ever witnessed in Redwater as they passed through town headed back to Edmonton.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/CN-9160-200x150.jpg)

![Every few days, for 2 to 3 years, first thing in the morning, a train of empty sulphur hoppers would roll through Redwater. On this day, I could not believe my eyes when looking out the back window of the house after hearing the horn blowing. Its grab the camera, jump in the chase car and off to Egremont. Blue sky and sun, not too late in the morning either so there still is some light on the nose as the units head north. Leading up the 48 empty hoppers was the 9171, 9190 and 9167, with caboose 79286 bringing up the rear. This photo taken a couple of miles north of Egremont at 8:00. As was typical for these trains, they returned the next day around suppertime.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/CN-9171-200x150.jpg)

![As the crew headed west from Scotford yard to switch the many industries in the Fort area, I made a quick stop by Dow Chemical to catch a photo of yard cab 76706. Today will be the last day for this section of the Vegreville Sub. As I was shooting this, there was a ceremony taking place on the new bridge over the North Saskatchewan river. This new piece of track will bypass the Fort and reconnect with the Veg. Sub. at Scotford yard. The section of track west from Scotford to Ft. Sask. will now become an industrial spur. These little yard cabooses probably had one of the shortest lifetimes. They seemed to quickly disappear as road cabooses became so readily available by their elimination from mainline duties.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/CN-76706-200x150.jpg)

![I stopped in on the south side of the Calder diesel shops to take a few photos when up from the city yard came the 1268 shoving a string of coaches. They were turning them on the wye formed at West Jct. with the tracks going in and out of Calder (towards the Pulldown) and the north and south mains which lead to City yard and the Edmonton depot. Complicated, but there is a wye that can be used. In my time, we turned coaches on a large loop track, just a ways south of West Jct. It was pretty rickety then and I assume not being used anymore in 1985. Of interest in the Calder area on this day. VIA 6511 with Steam Generator car 15409 were sitting on the shop tracks. An old Vanderbilt tender, #80080, was still sitting down by the Pulldown yard. It had been sitting there for a number of years. CN 1347 was parked at the East Tower and CN 1508 was switching at the West Tower. A nice variety of SW1200rs's.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/CN-1268-200x150.jpg)

![Stumbled on a clue a few days ago which lead to the note I wrote down for this train in 1985. The previous day, these units headed out as 836 with jet fuel tanks for the air base at Cold Lake. This photo shows it returning to Edmonton as an extra with empty tanks for the IOL refinery and loads of grain. The trailing units are the 4285 and 4316. Passing through town at lunch hour, we find the section guys stopped in and going about whatever business. The speeder will shortly be back on the rails, taking the gang to their afternoon work. The 4610 will be rebuilt into the 7221, which appears to have left the roster 4 or 5 years ago. There is a sad picture of the 7221's empty long hood on a flat car at the CNR photos website, dated Feb. 2015.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/CN-4610-200x150.jpg)

![A photo to go with the upcoming season. This picture was taken at the same time, just a few minutes earlier, than my first posting of this frosty day. Please see http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=38412 for my initial frosty post and additional info on No.91. Same passenger train, but, from the other side and shot west of Redwater. I really love the view down the track. The edge of Redwater is not more than a half mile away (the large tower in the background is on the outskirts of town). Although it looks like there are trees in this area, these are actually just the few along the R/W. It is very much open with farms surrounding the town.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Number-91-200x150.jpg)

![To complete the first and last of the rebuilt F7a's, here is the 9179 in the spring of 1983. The 9179 was previously the 9120 before rebuilding in December/74. It will go for B unit conversion in the fall of 1984. The crew has just finished picking up a couple of loaded cars from the elevators and returning back to the train. Of interest is the lack of yellow reflective strip below the zebra stripes. Also, and less noticeable, are some of the changes made on the front for snowplow service. The most obvious of these being the semi transparent number boards, only going to see those numbers at night. Another nice bonus is the 2 white flags flapping. Typically at this time, it was 2 sticks with some white left around the shaft. The rest of the flag either torn or flapped off. Please see my neighbouring photo for the rest of the caption. Thanks.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/CN-9179-200x150.jpg)

![This is the 9179, 3½ years after being converted to B unit 9107. The 9179 returned to the road as 9107 in November/84. It will be retired in December, 1989. According to the CNRHA, all the remaining F7AU's (A's & B's) were retired at this time. I had some hope that maybe a few B's would remain in service, as the cabs were rarely seen anymore in 88, nope, it was a clean sweep. I see the unit designation has had the 7 blacked out (GFB 1 b), making it look like combinations used during steam and early diesel times. The 5591 is leading this consist. This photograph was shot right by the mile 34 sign, very close to the end of May. Please see my neighbouring photo for the first part of this caption. Thanks.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/CN-9107-200x150.jpg)

![A photo from a time when I took no notes and used only print film. The negative is in rough condition and the picture shows it (this being my only shot of it, the other previous photo has it in the trees). My interest in fixing it up and posting? From a moderate search that satisfied my feelings that the 9150 is not an easy F7a to find photos of. Here it is leading 584, the grain train, as it approaches the trestle over the Redwater river. Checking on the CNRHA, the 9150 was previously the 9084 and left service in May, 1972 to be rebuilt. In this photo, the year may be 1983, although 1982 could be a possibility. It will be retired as an A unit in the fall of 1984 and converted to a B unit. Please see my neighbouring photo for the rest of the caption. Thanks.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/CN-9150-R2-200x150.jpg)

![This is the 9150 after being converted to a B unit. Again, from the CNRHA, it was released back to road service in December, 1984. Here it is working with the 4603, 4330, 9108 and 4216, hauling loaded sulphur hoppers to Edmonton. The actual day is iffy, but the first few days of September for sure. This photo was shot a few miles west of Redwater. From the date this picture was taken, the 9108 only has a couple of years of life left. The CNRHA reports it was retired in December, 1989. If these units had been easier to get in and out of, I would think they may have had longer lives, like their GP9 brothers. Please see my neighbouring photo for the first part of this caption. ![A slide taken by my Dad and seeing how old my brothers are here, I will say the time is 1958. The best I can guess on location is in the Edmonton area. Lucky day for my siblings, getting to spend time at work with Dad. I spent a few days there myself in the early 60's when he worked in the coach repair yard located at the City yard in downtown Edmonton. Leaf sprung trucks, upright brake wheel, and a not to easy to use pin lifter, besides various other items not to be found on cars today. I'm surprised the wheels do not have the little fins on the back of them for cooling. I hope you enjoy this small piece of my family's rail history.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Summer-of-1958-200x150.jpg)

![This eastbound piggyback train has only another 7.1 miles left on it's trip to Golden. I can only make out the first 3 numbers of the lead unit (the last may be a 5). The 5639 (with elephant ears), 5766 and 5715 trail. The elephant ears were the reason for this photograph. I was visiting relatives in the area at the time and I had to cut short the chase, with this being my best of the few shots I made. The rain clouds actually worked in favour of the photo, otherwise it would have been somewhat backlit. I believe the time is in the first half of July, actual date is unknown.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/CP-5639-Moberly-200x150.jpg)

![CN 2271 leads an eastbound IM down the south track at Clover Bar as it prepares to meet CN 2874 leading a westbound IM. There is a 20 year difference in age between these DC units with the 2271 being purchased just 12 years ago in 2007. It will be another 6 years from 2007 before CN takes a turn at buying AC power. This will lead to buying the new A1A trucked GE's with the load sensitive idler. I did not expect to see the return of the A1A, thinking the GMD-1 would be the last.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/CN-2271-200x150.jpg)
