![In connection to my photo of the 7227 waiting for permission to pass through a work area. Here is the reason for the delays at East Edmonton. For several days, to the right and out of sight in this photo, on the road to the diamond they constructed the new crossing. Just like the slow crawl when moving rockets out to the launch pad, the 2 backhoes did the same. You can see the new diamond suspended just below the buckets. I left shortly after this photo, it was a slow process. The 7227 has gone north and home and then 115 passed through going south several minutes before this moment. In the far distance to the left, you can see the red face of a CP engine. I suspect one more train passed through on the way to Fort Sask. before the dismantling of the old crossing began.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/East-Ed-Diamond-200x150.jpg)

![Happy Canada Day! Here is my long weekend surprise. As I came to Clover Bar this morning you could see the blue nose of this train waiting on the other side of the river. After the oil train cleared down the Camrose Sub. I was finally able to confirm that my first blue devil leader is on the way. With the 8879 helping, a bunch of grain empties are headed for destinations east.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/CN-2462-200x150.jpg)

![Going over the tracks on the Sherwood Park Fwy., I catch a glimpse of the 7227 sitting down below. They are asking for permission to go through the work area set up for replacing the East Edmonton diamond. In the distance down the tracks you can see the CN Strathcona sign and siding. The track curving off to the right from the mainline (you can see the red target on the switch) is the Strathcona spur. Although still of some length (over 6km's now compared to over 9km's in the past) it serves only a few customers. That is the WC 3027 tucked in behind.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/CN-7227-200x150.jpg)

![The 5357 has it's train of tanks on the move out of the East Edmonton siding to finish the last leg of the trip to Walker yard. The puddle notes the very heavy rain in the area just before Father's Days last year. Oddly enough, same thing this year, just after Father's Day. Both rain gauges in the backyard caught 40mm in the last 24hrs. Get those lawnmower's ready.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/CN-5357-200x150.jpg)

![BCOL 4644 has just come in off the Wainwright Sub. and is now setting off some tailend autoracks into Clover Bar yard before continuing the trip south to Calgary. Nice having the red, white and blue leading and although with those windows, the 4644, built in 95, is a little younger than the 2167. The 2167, formerly ATSF 811 and built in 92, has the older GSC/Adirondack trucks and a Sante Fe gull wing cab roof.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/BCR-4644-200x150.jpg)

![The units have just come off the bridge that crosses the North Saskatchewan river and the first thing off the bridge is Bretville Jct. No knowledge what the hoppers may carry but they are all empty and headed back for a refill. Although they paused for a moment, waiting for the just passed signal, it will be a couple more car lengths yet before the high beams come on. To add to that, in what will seem like only a few more car lengths, they will be up to track speed of 30mph.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/CN-2882-200x150.jpg)

![2920 brings up the tailend as the last of the empty oil can train rolls into Kinder Morgan. Of interest is the time it takes to get a freshly loaded train back out of there. When I was watching earlier this morning, it really is a round and round as they make their way through the crossovers and finally out. Almost reminiscent of an open pit mine.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/CN-2920-200x150.jpg)

![I have seen the 4444 puttering around South Edmonton for the last 2 months. Today it is leading and the sun is out, which is a nice change. Gee, I wonder if this is the midnight crew with the 3 lanterns tucked in the handholds? Obviously the boys were enjoying a fine morning as they trundled on past, no rush to get back to the Bar.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/CP-4444-200x150.jpg)

![Waiting for a only a few minutes (they got their light right away) in the East Edmonton siding with a string of tanks that will be taken to the storage yard on the outskirts of town. It was a year ago that I last photo'd the 4018, it's still looking great. It was just as hot on that day too, with all the windows and doors open.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/CCGX-40181-200x150.jpg)

![9:00 in the morning and only in the last half hour has the sun made any progress shining through the smoke. At least it is not down at ground level with the smell of burnt forest yet. It is getting a little silly, June is a week away and already the place is burning down. Whatever. Back to trains. The first train East this morning and I have to post a triple naught (even prefixed with a 3) for my friend jknott86. :-) The 3022 is helping out on the tailend.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/CN-3000-200x150.jpg)

![There seems to to be a very common strategy applied by the 2 major railroads with the kind of power provided for yard crews who deliver and pickup cars. For CN it is the 7530, 7520 and 7518, all former hump GP38-2's. For CP it is the 3126, 4432 and 4507. All with a different history, the 3126 is straightforward, the 4432 is a former SOO unit and the 4507 is originally a Milwaukee Road GP38-2. Although both sets of units look to be set up the same, cab end is rear on a 75hundred, thanks to Matt Watson for pointing this out. It is 8:45 and the CN midnight Scona job is only just now heading back to Clover Bar. Their night is going to get even longer as in a few minutes the way home will be blocked by derailed auto racks. At this moment in the photo, the CN units are almost over the East Edmonton diamond, while behind, CP pumps air to pull tanks out of I.O.L.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/CN-75301-200x150.jpg)

![CN 3181 at 7:30 has, only minutes ago, departed Kinder Morgan with the new and improved version of a pipeline. This newer version is not restricted by being buried in the ground. It is portable and can be rolled to many rail destinations. The 2801 is helping out on the rear. The 3181 is still looking pretty fresh, just a few splatters along the bottom edges.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/CN-3181-200x150.jpg)

![My only instance seeing one of these "Humpbacks" drive by. It is shoving on the rear of an oil train that, just a short while ago, departed the large Kinder Morgan rail loading facility. Have any of these ex-demo's been repainted yet? If not, so much the better, Blueberry paint and GECX initials add some nice variety.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/GECX-2029-200x150.jpg)

![Shoving cars from off the Wainwright Sub. so they then can be put into tracks on the other side of the berm behind the 7530. I believe these 2 units could have worked together as a hump set in the past (I have no knowledge if they actually did). The 7530 would be mother (by the aerials on the roof etc.), there would have been 2 slugs between them and the 7503 making up the other end. This would have been your typical sight at the east end of Calder yard during the 80's.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/CN-7530-200x150.jpg)

![Scona midnight job puttering back to the yard at 7:45. Another set of interesting units. The 9601 is your standard, lightweight frame, CN GP40-2L, in series 9400 to 9632. This is evident by the noticeable jog in frame height between the 2 units. The lighter frame allowing more sand and fuel. CN 9633 to 9667 and a handful of GO GP40-2's were built with standard frames, with the resulting decrease in fuel and sand. These units are GP40-2's with no L. All this frame info is according to Greg McDonnell's field guide. When checking roster sites on the web, many lump them all into the L designation. Now onto the 9671, which is a former GO unit and its GO number I am not sure of. It has the standard frame, which creates the jog as mentioned above. My curiosity is, does it still have 76mph gearing, the CNRHA lists it as such. Can't see it happening in yard service. The 9671 has the distinction of having pulled the American Orient Express across Canada twice.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/CN-9601-200x150.jpg)

![I had this photo out a few days ago in preparation for posting but another took its place. After seeing James Knott's recent photo of the 4726 I concede defeat. :-) I thought the 7524 looks pretty rough around the edges, it actually still has a few things to learn after seeing the 4726. LOL. Great photo James. For those interested, this is the midnight Scona job coming home at 8:30, they are negotiating the east leg of the wye.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/CN-7524-200x150.jpg)
