![The 4444 and 3095 have just finished spotting some cars and are returning to CP Clover Bar yard for the next item of work to be done on this nice morning. The paint on the 4444 looks pretty snappy, yet, only a couple of weeks later her diesel engine had quite a nasty bark. For a short time last summer, you always knew where this unit was just by the sound of the engine revving up.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/CP-4444-200x150.jpg)

![I took advantage of no auto traffic, great sun and close approach to catch a roster shot of the 1438. It was nice finding it out at the CN-CP exchange yard, located by Suncor. The last several times, I have only seen it working the yard at Clover Bar. I have my fingers crossed that at some point it will be freed of the middle unit position.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/CN-1438-200x150.jpg)

![Savage SVGX 7402 is 1 of 3 units sitting it out during this idle time at AltaSteel. With the stacks capped, it may be on its way to somewhere else, going for repair/maintenance or not expected to be needed for some length of time. I have little knowledge on this SW1500. A quick internet look indicates this unit has worked at a number of different industries. It does have a simple and attractive paint job.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/SVGX-7402-200x150.jpg)

![GMTX 335 and CANAC 1330 are 2 of 3 units sitting out front of the AltaSteel Mill. It was very tempting to pass through the open gate and get all 3 units in one photo. Best not to trespass and there is a large tree immediately in front of the 7402, which will have presented a photo angle problem. The SW1500 335 certainly appears to be a sister unit to the 333 that is photo'd in southern Ontario occasionally. There is no mistaking the heritage of the CANAC engine. It is still wearing the 1330 unit number assigned by CN. The most obvious change is the removal of the spark arrestors.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/GMTX-335-200x150.jpg)

![It is into the siding and roll down to the eastend of Clover Bar yard to stop and cutoff from the train. They will make a lift and 356 will then continue on to Wainwright. There has been a lot of the new GE's here lately, it was nice to see a pair of 70's powering this train.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/CN-8953-200x150.jpg)

![After a morning of CN Clover Bar, I made a stop in at the East Edmonton diamond to see if CP was making a move. As luck would have it, an oil train of empties for Kinder Morgan was approaching with the IOL crew also doing some work. The oil cans were headed up with 4 units, the 8111, 8778, 8784 and 8029. The 8776 was on the tailend. The 4507 and 4419 sat parked for the moment as the IOL crew, on the far left, stood and inspected. The 8111 is just a few car lengths from the diamond, the pink rail joints being on CN's Camrose Sub. The curving track in the immediate foreground is CP's lead into Kinder Morgan.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/CP-8111-200x150.jpg)

![Not the most scenic spot, it is the power combination that brought me out of the car for a photo. Any assortment of units is good to go as long as it pulls it seems. I'm pretty happy just to snag a GMD-1 in action here in Edmonton. I don't imagine, unless a real stroke of luck, that the 1438 leads very often. To me, it is playing a roll of "slug with an engine" in this set up. LOL The crew appeared to be sorting out cars that will probably head out on later shifts for dispersal.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/CN-7520-200x150.jpg)

![Checking out what may have changed over the winter in the Clover Bar area, I found the 7513 making a lift out of the CN-CP exchange yard, located by the Suncor refinery. It is the 204 that caught my eye. I have not seen a slug in sometime now. In my 2019 East Edmonton travels, a typical consist was a combination of GP38's and 40's, no slugs. Happy to see the 7227 still working here, it was assigned to Clover Bar last summer.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/CN-7513-200x150.jpg)

![The 9171 has just entered the south end of the connecting track and will head north to the Lac La Biche Sub and on wards to Waterways. For a train geek, having the connecting track installed was a great asset if you lived in Redwater. It pretty much doubled the number of trains per week through town and made consists like this easy prey for the camera. <br> Take care everyone as we head into several weeks of isolated living.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/CN-9171-200x150.jpg)

![The 4507 is coming back into the yard to grab a few more cars for spotting. The primer has been put over the unit number, which does leave it looking a little unusual. I can't wait for the return of summer days and early morning sun.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/CP-4507-200x150.jpg)

![A photo to go with Jamie Knotts recent post of the 4710. Here it is 29.7 years earlier. Not many changes in all that time. The yellow reflective stripe has been changed, electric bell replaces the mechanical, horn has been moved, some placards along the frame edge have gone and the paint has weathered. I snapped a few good pictures of this unit in the summer of 1986 in the black noodle scheme with original number 5510. Checking further in my notes, the first time I saw it freshly painted in zebra stripes was Feb.24th, 1987. My last sighting of it as the 5510 was June 18th, 1988. This photo is my initial sighting of it as the 4710. On this day it is taking loaded tanks to the airforce base and a few grain cars to be peddled along the way, cab 79836 is on the tailend. The 4708 is trailing, photo taken at 11:45.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/CN-4710-200x150.jpg)

![The units have just finished crossing the bridge at Waskatenau, which is immediately east of town. Mileage marker on the bridge shows 50.5. The 9169 is helping the 4609 bring grain back to Edmonton. Although not obvious in the photo, this bridge has some height to it. The North Sask. river is just a short ways off to the south and this creek has eroded a fairly deep valley as it terminates into the river.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/CN-4609-200x150.jpg)

![I did not put a date in my notes for this photo, the other photos on the roll will place the time safely as the middle of July. The 4236 has taken the siding at Gibbons, waiting for an eastbound. Besides the usual empty tanks from the airforce base and loads of grain, they have some work train cars on the headend. As I was taking my pictures, the hoghead and brakeman came out for a nice chat. If I was on the ball, I should have had them pose in front of their engine. In a short while they were on the way to Edmonton, the trailing unit is the 4330. Fortunately, both these units were rebuilt. The 4236 to the 7066 and the 4330 to the 7256. I could not find any recent photos of the 7066, maybe it is retired or sold. Michael Berry does have some recent photos of the 7256 in Montreal from 2016.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/CN-4236-200x150.jpg)

![The one instance of a SOO paint job I have seen on my outings in south Edmonton. Take your pick of the 3 visible company designations. You have to zoom close on my original to see the remnant of circle with the I on the side of the unit from the INRD. The SOO and INRD do a nice overlap on the nose. Whatever the paint scheme, I do like the SD60 model.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/CEFX-6007-200x150.jpg)

![A slide taken by my Dad from the caboose door of a work train. I have little info on this slide, he did work in Athabasca during the 50's, so, I have made a guess that this may be the Athabasca Sub. It will be safer to say in the Edmonton area. My Dad was a carmen for the extent of his CN career, not sure why he would be on a work train, unless catching a ride to some point to repair a disabled car. The engine is an RS3. It can be seen on the slide that the rear headlight has been converted from a single to a double beamed, which coincides with late 50's for the time period. There is no making out the engine number or hood details to help date the photo. The slide film used is called Munshaw Pix-A-Color, it did not age as well compared to his other photos on Kodachrome. The sky and golden/orange colours needed some work to bring them inline to a more natural hue.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Athabasca-01-200x150.jpg)

![I have called this train 836. But, starting in 1986 (or 85), the Coronado Sub. became MBS territory and 584 and 836 were no longer listed in the employee time table. I have no knowledge what this movement may have been called with the change to MBS, so, I'm going with 836 or the Jet Fuel train. Here it is at the Kerensky siding, they are just about ready to stop to get the connecting track switch and then proceed onward to the Cold Lake airforce base. It is a solid string of tanks today with Cab 79822 bringing up the rear. Another lineup of elephant style units, which, the exNAR power easily created with CN's long hood forward GP9's (the 4236 is the trailing unit). An early frosting of the trees makes the season appear much later than Nov.10th. Time of this photo is 11:30.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/CN-4607-200x150.jpg)

![A couple of interesting units are heading up an eastbound IM. Nifty road number on the lead unit, the second is the exLMS (IC) unit 2459. The CN painted box behind the cab always puts a smile on my face, same with the noodle, it looks like it was hand painted. The summer of 2018 had a real variety of units going by every day. 2019 was much less so and I expect that this summer will be even less eventful with the arrival of so many new GE's. Photo taken at mile 259 at 10:00.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/CN-8888-200x150.jpg)

![Just a few minutes prior to this photo, I was taking pictures of an Edmonton bound loaded sulphur train. As the caboose went by, in the distance you could see the section men were following close behind (it was after 12:30 and time for a dinner stop at Gibbons). Glad I waited for a photo as the fellows inside gave me a nice clear "rabbit ears" through the window. These new speeders were not many years old at this time. But, just like the yard cabs I made mention of in a previous caption, they did not last long. Trucks became the norm for traveling the rails. I have made a few trips myself in a speeder and comfortable they are not. I'm sure most enjoyed the move to truck cabs, certainly more comfy, quiet and warm. Photo taken just east of the highway overpass at Gibbons.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/CN-Speeder-200x150.jpg)

![A roster shot of the 4342, taken west of Redwater at 19:45. Only a few years earlier (85 to 87) I was enjoying a wealth of variety in first generation units. In the last year preceding this photo, there was only a handful of occasions with a high hood GP9 in the consist, and only trailing, never leading. Essentially, B units with windows. It had been some several weeks since seeing the last one and on this sunny night, I took advantage. Good thing, as this is the last high hood I photo'd on the Coronado Sub. Showing some obvious signs of wear and tear but still pulling. The lineup consisted of the 4785, 4243, 4706 and 4704 hauling a hefty string of liquid sulphur tanks with an equal number of empty ballast hoppers. Cab 79487 brought up the rear. A period, not unlike the current GE's, started on the Coronado Sub. with most traffic headed up by GP38's (re-built GP9's made appearances). Although looking like a drab future, things were to change considerably in the next several years. Including having RailLink operating trains to the Fort McMurray area.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/CN-4243-200x150.jpg)
