Extra 5610 West's 309 photos on Railpictures.ca:
![Stopped in at Jasper at suppertime coming home from vacation. I found the 5296 making a move, setting out a BO?, on an eastbound freight. The NAR 13024 was the interesting tag-along at the rear. Finding some info on this caboose required some extra work. I finally found a photo of it on page 17 of volume 2 in the soft cover fold over The Northern Alberta Railways by Colin Hatcher. In the caption, it is mentioned that the 13024 to 13026 were the first NAR caboose to have bay windows applied. Also, that these 3 were built at their own Dunvegan shops in August 1953. In the booklet photo, the 13024 has end ladders going up and then curling down onto the roof, with a nice running board. All have been removed here. Glass in the bay windows has disappeared and the trees behind can be seen. Not a wreck though, plenty re-store-able. Could find no net info on it, thought it may have turned up as a historical item somewhere. Nifty that the NAR paint had not been modified.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/NAR-13024-200x150.jpg)

![Saturday morning at 11:00 and the regular crew is heading home for a day off. They will be back on Monday with 836 the fuel train. They have 35 loads in tow and cab 79836 at the back. Unusual that they changed ends rather than turn the units. Worked for me, the Fort McMurray was always high on my list for catching photos of. Taken just a short ways east of the Coronado siding.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/CN-4609-3-200x150.jpg)

![The unit train is passing south over the connecting track between the Lac La Biche and Coronado Subs, there is also a grade crossing with Hwy 28 at this point. I posted a photo of CN 61202 some time ago, it was also making a trip to and from Fort McMurry. For whatever reason, these cars made the occasional trip during the 80's. Unlike the 61202, this car is single ended, reading the 1989 CTG, it reports that it was originally built as an express reefer in 1957. No date as to when it was converted, this will be when the single end was added (the other end still looked like a box car end) and those pretty sweet trucks (or are they from express reefer days?). The 61202, although double ended, rode on caboose trucks. As I mentioned before, to have one of these for your personal use would be a dream come true. This one, if you look close on the roof (it is folded up), even comes with a TV antenna, nice. Photo taken at 20:30 using Ektachrome 200 film.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/CN-70067-200x150.jpg)

![Climbing the hill up to Redwater, the grain extra has quite a bit of power for approx. 40 loaded hoppers. The units are hardly breaking a sweat compared to bringing 50 loaded sulphur hoppers up the same hill.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/CN-5515-200x150.jpg)

![The one time I was able to catch the 5600 paired with the 5500. They do make a nice looking couple. Especially with a CP plug door box, and my fav script lettering on it, following right behind. ![Standing at the recently constructed Woodgrove super elevator, 836 is about to pass by with 3 lonely hoppers and approx. 3 times that many loads of jet fuel. This is one of the largest trains of tanks I saw heading out to Cold Lake, a lot of thirsty jets in the next few days. This new elevator now served a large radius of farms, it also brought about the end to many of the elevators located within towns.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/CN-4716-1-200x150.jpg)

![Climbing the hill up from the river, 584 has a late start to the day at 14:30. The usual ballpark for passing through is 11:00 in the morning on Wednesday. The mile 34 post is right behind me and they will soon be getting the switch at Kerensky to continue east. 31 hoppers should not keep them to busy. Amazing weather for March 2nd, hardly any snow. Winter, most years, still has a good grip at this time.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/CN-1073-1-200x150.jpg)

![On the way to bring sulphur buggies home. Cab 79497 at the rear. Shot first thing in the morning, just a short ways north of Egremont. ![Big line up on this train, or, so it seems. The work train has caught a ride out to Redwater. Starting with the 4607, there is also the 9100, 4330, 4338, and 4350. The 4338 and 4350 are the units for the work train and you can see their large train of ballast cars behind. It was quite the operation as these 2 trains separated themselves in Redwater, as the all the MOW units that were just here working, see bare track and ties in front of 4607, held the main line in town. Leaving just the passing and elevator tracks to do switching. At this moment, the running crew is waiting for all the MOW of way units to get into clear. Eventually the 4607, 9100 4330 and cab 79420 will depart with a large string of empty sulphur hoppers for northern Alberta. During these early spring days in 1988, almost every train out of Edmonton brought ballast cars with them. What had started as a small trickle a couple of years ago, was coming to a grand close, the track never looked better by end of summer.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/CN-4607-2-200x150.jpg)

![As the units pass over the trestle at mile 18.45, the engineer throttles them up a notch to climb the hill from the Sturgeon river. Beneath the trestle is township road 564, which takes traffic out to Hwy.28. In 2 more miles the mixed will pass through the hamlet of Coronado. The tail end was full with 2 baggage cars, 2 coach cars and a caboose.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/CN-5593-200x150.jpg)

![A very late return for the mixed train. Typically coming home late Tuesday/early Wednesday, it is seen here returning at 16:15 on Thursday. The wye at Waterways only turns one unit, which leads to natural hat tricks of units on the return trip. In just a few more miles they will enjoy sunshine the rest of the way, as the edge of the storm is just above us. Not to often did you see the class lights lit up on GP9's.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/CN-4266-200x150.jpg)

![The tail end man is enjoying a warm summer day as No. 91 arrives at Kerensky and the Jct. with the Lac La Biche Sub. Cab 79101 did not have many trips left to go, she will be replaced by CN cab 79881, which held this duty until No. 91 was pulled. How great it was to have all the poles cut down, this became a prime afternoon location. Taken at 13:30, with the 5588 (now 4788) up front.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/CN-79101-200x150.jpg)

![Possibly, this photo will give some light to Jacob's comment on truck bearings. This a converted baggage car in work train service, parked in the Redwater siding. You can see the equipment gets a lot of love. Every bearing is different. SKF on the left, Timken in the middle and Hyatt on the right. Also, when I zoom in on the original photo, the Timken is made in England and the Hyatt in Canada. A couple of weeks later, converted baggage car 70781 was parked in the siding. It had 2 Hyatt's left and centre, with a freight roller bearing on the right. Sure looked like a freight bearing with the rounded corner triangle and 3 bolts within (instead of the covers with names as seen in the photo above). Seems with these older cars, if it fits, put it on and she's good to go. :-)](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/CN-Truck-200x150.jpg)

![All those cars of grain heading off to be turned into loaves of bread, slices of pizza, tasty cookies . . . There are a few unusual cars in the train. A couple of plug door boxcars and several of the gray coloured CN hoppers make for a little variety from the solid Gov't hopper consists. Up at the front, the 4323 and 4352 are taking the extra home. I see in my notes, I was enjoying my newly purchased film winder the last couple of days. What a difference that made. Shot with Kodak 100asa print film at mile 27.7.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/CN-79836-01-200x150.jpg)

![The 8136 is going to pass through a clear alley at CP Clover Bar yard as it heads out to Fort Saskatchewan. The yard job will have a long wait as this train is very long. Both railroads have enjoyed business in the Fort area for many many years. For the last several years, using train length as an indicator, business is doing very well.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/CP-8136-200x150.jpg)

![The extra is coming around the corner that will take it past the hamlet of Coronado. Today it is just a string of empty fuel tanks and cab 79836 at the back as the crew returns to Edmonton. I've said it numerous times, love the way ex-NAR units set up interesting unit combinations that appear to be all facing in the same direction.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/CN-4603-1-200x150.jpg)

![The point man is bringing the units and a cut of cars across 17th street and then onto the Camrose Sub. They are being pulled out of the CN-CP exchange yard located by the Suncor refinery. The crew will make a few more stops going south before running around their train and head north and back to Clover Bar. ![The 5580, 5503 and 5589 are going to tie into 50 loads of sulphur as soon as they clear the trestle. By the time they reach main street in Redwater (2.5 miles from here), progress will be down to less than 15mph. It will be another couple of miles until the units have the train back up to speed. Caboose 79392 was at the rear. Also, what looks to be brake smoke is dust from freshly applied and spread ballast. This photo was taken with Kodachrome 25 at 1/500th. I made no entry for aperture, which must have been close to wide open (50mm, f/1.4). Imagine being track side using iso25, could present challenges.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/CN-5580-200x150.jpg)
