584 is not making a stop today in Redwater. Cruised right on through to the next town, Radway. They have a seed cleaning plant there, my, what a dusty job. Huge clouds of dust coming out of the separators.

2 boxes next to caboose 79836 break a perfect 35 in a row of Gov't grain hoppers. The hoppers sure were not the targets they are now for graffiti. Photo taken at mile 26.6 at 11:20 as 584 approaches Redwater on the way east.

The units have just crossed the highway as they pass over the connecting track to the Lac La Biche Sub. The old highway crossing is in the foreground, a much safer and more visible intersection was created here between railroad and the 2 highways. Coach 5099, caboose 79101 and baggage 7856 brought up the rear. Time of photo, 20:45.

Not a typical 584 today, no big string of Gov't grain hoppers. That is the 9166 in behind with the louvers instead of grill work along the top edge. This day shaped up to be the best of the summer. At 8:00 the unit train headed out with the 9171, 9190 and 9167 for power. Now at 11:00, this is coming down the track (with blue sky all morning). Photo taken at mile 26.6.

A unit train is passing over the wood trestle at mile 17.7 as it returns to Edmonton at 8:30. The chimney with the top missing, to the right of the cupola, sure looks odd.

With those white flags flapping, the 5589 has more than just empty fuel tanks in tow going home today. Besides the typical grain hoppers and empty tanks, there was a string of 15 empty gons, plus, as can be seen in the photo, a bunch of work train cars. All headed for Calder yard. This photo is one of the rare few times I used the 28mm on my camera. Picture taken by mile 23.8 at 13:00.

After doing some work in the East Edmonton area, these 3 are returning to Clover Bar yard. They look like the 3 Musketeers, each with its own version of CN livery.

The grain extra is coming down the grade that leads to the big wood trestle over the Sturgeon river at mile 17.7. The town of Gibbons is only a short distance further on. This photo was taken by mile 18.4 at 10:30.

With 10 tanks of fuel in tow and cab 79501, 836 is approaching the Kerensky siding and will be making a meet with the grain extra, 5500 and 5512, which is already waiting there. The 1082 is followed by the 1076 and 1069. Photo taken by mile 34 at 11:00.

The junction switch at Kerensky is only a few miles behind as 836 makes dust zipping by at track speed. The 4314 is coupled to the 9160, cab 79836 at the back. The fuel tanks can be seen further back, the empty gon is curious, they typically went out on 836 loaded with pipe for pipelines. The 1052 and 1057 are rare visitors to the Coronado Sub. It was this one round trip (grain peddling) for them and I never saw them again. The 1052 does show some green wearing through the black. Also, at the back of the train, several grain boxes can be seen. They are the help that was needed at this time when Gov't grain hoppers were in short supply. Caboose 79836 is just peaking out at the edge of the bush. Photo taken at mile 24.4 at 14:30.

A work extra showed up on this Tuesday morning, dumping cars on either side of the Redwater river. They are off to dump the last 3 cars at a spot on the hill up to Redwater. Their cab, CN 79520, is left in the siding and soon will be picked up it as they head back to get the cars refilled. The crew spent the whole week in the Redwater area, going back to Edmonton on Friday afternoon to enjoy some time off. Photo taken at 11:00.

The fuel tanks are headed back to Edmonton for a re-fill. These 2 units are having to put their backs into getting 30 cars home (20 grain loads, 10 MT tanks), the engineer had them running at a good clip along here. They will have one more river to cross and climb up from while passing through Gibbons. Photo taken just east of Coronado.

How to make a GP38 look good, add 3 f units. :^) A cabhop at the northend of Egremont siding, on the way north to pickup a loaded unit train of sulphur. Cab 79282 at the rear, time was 8:30.

Some history leading up to this photo. On Wednesday the 29th at 10:40, 836 came limping into Redwater with the 4606 and 4294 and took the siding. After stopping, the reason why 836 was struggling became apparent, the 4294 was dead. If you can imagine, within a few minutes, the 4606 is burping and stops, out of fuel also. You can hear the conversation on the section radio. Diesel fuel is ordered and put in. Meanwhile, a unit train of sulphur empties go by heading north at 11:10 with 9159, 9194 and 9164. Next at 11:40, 584 heads out with 1082, 1075 and 1081. Those pair make a nice fill in while the units are being refueled :^). Finally at 13:10 they start them up, but, only the 4606 will run. At 13:20, decided to go home. A half hour later they are back, still having problems. At 15:00 they left and made it to Edmonton. At 19:00 a new 836 and crew come rolling through town. They now have the 4314 and 9108 for power. This photo shows the 4314 returning on Thursday at 15:25 as the extra approach's Kerensky siding.

A few days earlier on Sunday afternoon, (July 17th) at 14:00, this extra auxiliary train passed through Redwater as it headed up north. The day of this photo, (July 21st) Thursday at 9:15, it is coming home and the 4603 just passed through Gibbons a couple of miles back. They are on the last big curve that then straightens and goes due south 12.5 miles to connect with the Vegreville Sub at St. Paul Jct. A caboose (they had 2 when heading out) and coach 54957 were left up north and did not return until several days later. The dark countryside behind the caboose is the Sturgeon valley and they are climbing the last bit of grade up from it.

One of the few times where I saw the Muskeg Mixed reduced to a cabhop from a lack of cars. Taken a couple of miles north of Egremont at 19:30.

The unit train is passing the west boundary of Redwater and it was a beautiful evening to be up in the cab with the window open. Tagging along at the back of the sulphur loads are a pair of cabooses, cab 79248 and business cab 70067. I always liked this farmers fence, ties split in half and stuck in the ground. A warm, late in the summer sunny day, finds No. 91 on the way north with an extra baggage car added in for good measure. There was not many runs made with the older noodle scheme GP38's. I liked it when these units did lead as, although the cars all look VIA, everything is labelled with a nice CN.
