This work extra arrived in Redwater at 16:45, stopped and picked up a few cars out of the siding and then the crew went for supper at the Redwater Hotel. This photo shows them leaving town at mile 26.6, the time is 18:00, just a quick bite to eat and it is off to Gibbons. How lucky to have a sunny evening, as this was the last time I would photo a train with an f-unit in the lead. On the 30th the 9198 went by between the 4808 and 4705. The grand finale happened on Sept. 2nd and 3rd. On the 2nd it was the 4216, 9167 and 4603 heading out. The 3rd had the 4602, 9102 and 4351 heading out, plus the return of the 4603, 9167 and 4216. I never saw any type of f-unit again on the Coronado in active service.

The previous day, this train headed out with the 4808 leading. As luck will have it, they changed ends, rather than wye, and the 1613 lead the way home. The grain extra is passing through the small town of Radway at 11:00. The history behind the 1613, it started out as the 1036, re-built to the 1613, re-built again using the 4 wheel trucks and fuel tank from the 1133 to become the final number 1443 (re-built info from CNRHA). This was the one time I saw a 1600 on the Coronado. About a week later I saw it again at the Calder diesel shop, it was in a much better trio with the 1612 taking the 4808's place.

836 has an extra task on this run. Although at this spot by mile 37, there seems little for the blade to do. Further east where there are open spots for the wind to get going, drifted snow on the track can be a foot high or more. It will not be fluffy either, usually hard enough that a person can walk on top without breaking the surface. The 4350 and 9190 were heading up the train.

The 4236 and 4370 have 33 loads of grain to pull up the hill to Redwater and the engineer has widened the throttle to help. Cab 79836 at the rear. You really just took it for granted back then that trains did not come with graffiti.

On a September morning at approx. 10:30, 584 is taking the siding in preparation for a meet with the returning extra from the air base with its usual train of empty jet fuel tanks.

How nice it was to have a toasty caboose when working in weather such as this. The 5510, 4347 and 5506 have 40 loads of grain and some empty gons headed back to Calder yard. Photo taken at mile 23.8 at 10:40, shot at f11, 1/125 sec, with 50mm.

On top of the empty tanks and grain loads we find a few work train cars as extra 4604 travels towards Edmonton. I see the transformation to CN livery was not complete, the MU cable cover is yellow, just like the 4606's in behind. It's a tough call, the stripes do look pretty good, the old NAR paint with name on the cab doesn't hurt the eyes either. The 4604 was an infrequent visitor to the Coronado Sub. A CN 0-6-0 from the contact prints taken by my Dad. A short look turned up a few facts on these switchers. They were built for Canadian Northern by CLC between the dates of 1912 and 1914 (number series 7031 to 7065 [from CNRHA]). The 7055 is shown retired in Sept. of 1950 (Trainweb.org). This last fact helps to date this picture. As can be seen, the main rods are missing and the 7055 is in a rather run down state. Scrapping must not be be long in the future at the time this photo was taken. Location is unknown.

I have a small number of what appears to be contact prints of various rail scenes taken by my Dad. The time of these photos, with fairly good certainty, will be sometime after WWII till the early 50's. Location, some will be here in Alberta, but, family trips were made down east during this time too, so Canada. The actual history behind the photos has been lost with the passing of their generation. I hope they are enjoyed. A Micro-Nikkor 55mm f2.8 AIS lens with pk-13 tube attached, all mounted on a D810, was used for reproduction.

Quite some time ago I posted a photo of this caboose taken in the evening and showing the west side. For completeness and the fact there is a crest on the opposite side. Here is the east side taken in the morning sun. I drove by hear the other day and the caboose is still standing sentinel over the Strathcona industrial district. It certainly has my vote to keep it standing.

Unit train just entering the connecting track to the Lac La Biche Sub. Just a short train of empties today, otherwise cars would be seen in the gap to the left between hoppers and bush. Photo taken about an hour after sunup.

584 is not making a stop today in Redwater. Cruised right on through to the next town, Radway. They have a seed cleaning plant there, my, what a dusty job. Huge clouds of dust coming out of the separators.

2 boxes next to caboose 79836 break a perfect 35 in a row of Gov't grain hoppers. The hoppers sure were not the targets they are now for graffiti. Photo taken at mile 26.6 at 11:20 as 584 approaches Redwater on the way east.

The units have just crossed the highway as they pass over the connecting track to the Lac La Biche Sub. The old highway crossing is in the foreground, a much safer and more visible intersection was created here between railroad and the 2 highways. Coach 5099, caboose 79101 and baggage 7856 brought up the rear. Time of photo, 20:45.

Not a typical 584 today, no big string of Gov't grain hoppers. That is the 9166 in behind with the louvers instead of grill work along the top edge. This day shaped up to be the best of the summer. At 8:00 the unit train headed out with the 9171, 9190 and 9167 for power. Now at 11:00, this is coming down the track (with blue sky all morning). Photo taken at mile 26.6.

A unit train is passing over the wood trestle at mile 17.7 as it returns to Edmonton at 8:30. The chimney with the top missing, to the right of the cupola, sure looks odd.

With those white flags flapping, the 5589 has more than just empty fuel tanks in tow going home today. Besides the typical grain hoppers and empty tanks, there was a string of 15 empty gons, plus, as can be seen in the photo, a bunch of work train cars. All headed for Calder yard. This photo is one of the rare few times I used the 28mm on my camera. Picture taken by mile 23.8 at 13:00.

After doing some work in the East Edmonton area, these 3 are returning to Clover Bar yard. They look like the 3 Musketeers, each with its own version of CN livery.
