Following the trend of photo's recently posted here is another I hope you will find of interest. This is the 1272 waiting midmorning in the Boston Bar yard to continue it's way east. I checked at the time and found that it was based in the Vancouver area but did not no where it was headed to. It seems it eventually was sold into industrial application. Photo taken during a small sunny hole in otherwise thick grey clouds. Obviously in transport here with the stacks taped up. 2 SD40's up front for power. For me the Flexicoil trucks suited switchers so much better than under GP9's.

Hoppers full of golden nuggets headed for Calder yard Edmonton. The 5582, 5571 and 5569 are crossing the trestle over the Sturgeon River at Mile 17.7, this is about a mile east of the town of Gibbons. It is train of only 35 loads, an easy task for this power which typically brings 50 loads home. A curiosity in this photo are the horizontal timbers of the bridge under the trailing unit (the 5569). The timbers under the rear truck are about a foot higher than the timbers under the front truck. There is an actual kink in these timbers under the fuel tank. Kind of strange. I suppose this addresses the versatility of wood, when things are not fitting to well (or an adjustment is needed) you cut it to size. Not an easy task with steel.

A little less than 2 months earlier, the 4332 was involved in a crossing accident on the west boundary of Redwater. It is back in action sporting it's new nose. It was given a somewhat larger than typical CN on the front. The usual C ends on the outside bolt of the handrails, here the whole white part of the C extends past that bolt. It has the 4609 for company and a string of jet fuel cars. A year before this would have been 836 but in 1986 they went to MBS and everything became extra trains.

For reasons that I was never able to determine, trains running up and back to Fort McMurray were way off their normal patterns lately. Here we have a Muskeg Mixed returning home on a Thursday at 16:15 in the afternoon. Very unusual. To add to that they only have Baggage car 7857 on the tailend, no coach and they also have caboose 79508, not 79101 which is normally assigned to this train. The 4266, 4253 and 4247 are heading up tonight's train. A thunderstorm has just passed leaving the countryside fresh and green. The sky to the west is completely clear with the sun not quite out of the clouds which gives this scene its interesting illumination.

Photo of VIA 6147 being spotted by a CP crew at the South Edmonton Station. Picture taken in late winter of 1983 or 1984. The memory that stands out the most for me and these rail cars is every year or 2 there would be a serious grade crossing accident somewhere between Edmonton and Calgary. Definitely a job where the engineer should have received danger pay.

A work extra busy building a train at the Egremont siding. Several photos ago I showed 90 covered hoppers being shoved into the old part of the Lac La Biche Sub. for storage. Here they are being dug out and built into a train. 15 or 20 cars at a time they were being brought out, run around then shoved north of the siding. I'm sure they were wishing the siding was longer. The fellow riding in the footwell is one of my favourite foreman from when I worked at CN. When I was there he worked afternoons at Clover Bar yard. You really liked getting him as you were pretty much guaranteed going home at least 4 hours early. This was a hard concept for friends to understand. Going to work for 15:30, work till 19:30 or so and then off to the friends house for an evening of fun just after 20:00. You also took a break during your shift as you had to get into the yard office for several rounds of Smear. I honestly can say I have never worked another job like railroading.

The Thursday morning grain extra heading home to Calder yard. Thursday was a good day for trains in Redwater. If you were lucky the day would start with an early morning sulphur train headed to Fort McMurray. Next 836 would roll through town before lunchtime, headed to the airforce base. After that the grain extra came through on its way back to Calder. If the timing was real good 836 would meet the extra in Redwater. Today they met at Kerensky. Photo taken at the mile 23.8 grade crossing, time 11:30.

At 11:45 584 passed through Redwater, not stopping at our elevators and continued east. About 10 minutes later, also arriving from the west, is the section gang. Looking at the original slide you can see there are 4 guys sitting in the speeder, plus they have a wagon tagging along, nice. It will be 12:00 shortly and I'm sure most of the crew will head over to the Redwater hotel for lunch. It is just across the street and they served a good lunch there.

The Fort McMurray passenger train is passing over the Redwater river trestle. The time is after 1:00 in the afternoon and they still have a long ways to go. The train consists of Baggage 7857 and Coach 5099. As you can see, there have been ice fogs during the night, which leaves everything white and frosty.

The 1082, 1076 and 1069 have just finished lifting the loads at the Gibbons elevators and are now headed to Edmonton. The time is 11:00 yet the shadows are long. Mine is at the bottom of the photo. Something that usually only happens when taking pictures at the very end (or beginning) of the day in summer. This photo spot is immediately south of Gibbons but has changed somewhat from this moment.

Roster shot of the 9179. It is heading up the grain extra which has just finished picking up loaded grain cars in Redwater and will soon depart for Edmonton. The date again is uncertain. I checked on CNRphotos.com and found a picture of the 9179 from the summer of 1982. It was looking weathered in that photo but the cab still has decent paint. In my picture the cab and grill work are getting quite weathered. This leads me to think that this may be the spring of 1984. It was retired in Nov./84 and it certainly is looking pretty sad here. Can barely make out the numbers in the numberboard. I'm glad it enjoyed a second life as the 9107. Of interest is that the 9179 does not have the orange reflective stripe like the 9172 trailing. Also, if you can zoom in, the grills on each unit are different. The 9179 has slots that are vertical, the 9172's are horizontal. Mr. Mooney has a photo of the 9179 in snow plow service, does vertical grillwork keep the snow out better? Anyways, modeling the 9179 for your layout will present some challenges I think.

This photo taken with print film and long before I kept records. The date could be the summer of 1983 but also possibly 1984. I have posted this photo as I don't have many pictures of the 4610 Slave Lake and this is the best of the few I have found so far. The other 2 units are the 4285 and 4316. Photo taken in Redwater, time appears to be after lunch.

The 6's are on a roll today. This is 836 heading out with the 9166 and 9156 up front and caboose 79836 bringing up the rear. Not to often did I see F-units come through town with the jumper cable plugged in and draped across the nose. The 9156 was an infrequent visitor and I had hoped it would be in the lead tomorrow when they come home. Nope, they turned the units on the wye. Picture taken in Redwater, time 12:15.

On occasion CN sent out 2 ten hundreds instead of the typical 3. Here the grain extra is headed home with 22 loaded hoppers and the units have been working hard up the last part of the hill into town. In just a short distance more, the majority of the train will be on the easier grade. They will have doubled their speed by time the caboose has cleared the other side of Redwater. Train time in Redwater. The Jet Fuel train is coming through town and will continue on its way to the air force base. 2 people have come to watch it go by as well as the sectionman have stopped what they are doing to inspect its passing. 2 speeders are rolled out and I believe being readied by the 2 fellows working. There is even a red CN panel truck in the background. Time of photo 9:45.

Bunch of empty hoppers on their way to be filled with sulphur. The train consists almost completely of the larger sized hopper. In the next little while they will start having a few bathtub gondolas mixed in, which will lead to solid trains of these cars. The 4331, 4285 and 4351 make up the consist. As the GP9 fleet disappeared this of course led to a lot of repetition of the same units going through town. The 4285 certainly fits this pattern. By this late date, if old power formed the consist, the 4285 was almost sure to be a member. Photo taken just south of mile 34, time 16:30.

I watched these guys for several minutes in Scotford yard while they sorted out the train. They are done and on there way to switch the many plants that populate the countryside east of Fort Saskatchewan. The back half of the train is still on the yard lead but we are not wasting any time getting going. They must have a BFR at one of the plantsites. My GPS is only approximate as the wye and bypass track have not been built yet at this spot. Time is 13:00.

Initially saw this train in Redwater. As the covered hoppers were all of one type, I figured they are headed for storage on the old Lac La Biche Sub. At Egremont I watched as they shoved 90 hoppers into the old Sub. The headend brakeman is chatting with the hoghead as they wait for the tailend brakeman to walk back. Next will be pick up the caboose and head cabhop to Fort McMurray for a load of sulphur. On a sombre note the 5586, which is heading up the power. In just a little over 4 months from this date, it will be in the lead again but involved in the head on collision near Hinton. A tragic day in rail history. Time of photo 8:30.

The Thursday 836 is on the way to Cold Lake with jet fuel and a few gondola loads of pipe. So far in my looking through the slide collection this is the first instance of 3 former NAR GMD-1's together. They are the 1081, 1082 and 1077. As I prepared this photo I noticed that the 1081 still has its truck mounted sandboxes next to the fuel tank. The 2 behind have had them removed as well as most of (if not all) the CN units. The Hogheads arm is out ready to honk the horn for the upcoming public grade crossing. I'm standing at a farm crossing just east of mile 40, time 10:30.

Big night for the Cubs. The tailend brakeman on the step has just about brought the train to a stop. 35 happy Cubs are going to detrain and fill the parking lot with chatter about their ride from Edmonton to Redwater. What a great idea for a bunch of kids on a beautiful evening. In another 15 minutes they will all be in their bus and headed back to Edmonton. I went and talked to the tailend brakeman after the kids got off. He was just as excited. A great evening was enjoyed by everyone. Photo taken at 20:00. The coach is the 5095.
