![Roster shot of CN Rail Car 176-16. This photo shows clearly the "cutting wheel" used in wintertime, as mentioned by Paul O'shell in a past comment column. You can also plainly see the handbrake has been applied by the brake pads pressed up against the wheels. For those who did not have a scanner back then, that speaker on the back of the speeder was a great source as to what and when things may be about to happen.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/CN-Speeder-05-200x150.jpg)

![An early mid October morning finds a unit train entering the south end of the connecting track, which is located next to the Kerensky siding. The Coronado sub. can be seen continuing east beside the units. It was a beautiful morning waiting for the train to arrive, and the engineer, with windows wide open, gives clear indication as to how nice it was. What seems like a lot of power, is actually the work extra, hitching a ride to whichever siding the equipment is parked at. The end 2 units, the 4216 and 5504, will be left there along with a caboose.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/CN-5590-01-200x150.jpg)

![The chase is on in this photo. Grabbing a couple more shots of this consist before the highway crosses the tracks and the sun will be on the wrong side. Photo taken north of Egremont at 8:30.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/CN-79282-200x150.jpg)

![The 7526 is headed to pull out some tanks north of the main and bring them back over to Clover Bar yard. The missing marker lamp panel looks like it would be a good place for birds to nest. Plus, the 7526 is still paired with it's slug the 526.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/CN-7526-200x150.jpg)

![GMD-1's with dandruff :^). The grain extra has just finished picking up 4 hoppers from the elevators in Redwater and now has all 35 loads rolling for Gibbons. Looking at my notes, I shot this at f8 and 1/125, surprised there is no blur in the picture. This photo taken at the Burger Baron crossing (main street) in Redwater at 10:55.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/CN-1069-03-200x150.jpg)

![Here is a first for people who like them. The new street level LRT has been testing for a few months now. I'm a little surprised no one has caught this already. It's a short walk from my house and I went to the tracks on this sunny day to grab some shots. Edmonton drivers are not used to turning right and having a train, which has the right of way, going through the intersection. The LRT wins every time and this has happened several times already. Besides the accidents, I'm amazed it is running, this project has been delayed for 2 or more years with repeated delays and setbacks. The last was a very large number of cracked piers on the Argyll road overpass (and beyond) that had to be fixed up. It's testing now and go right on ahead and give this photo the half star it deserves. :^)](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/ETS-1017-200x150.jpg)

![A late 50's photo of the Vancouver station to contrast with Paul O'Shells recent station picture. I believe, needs confirmation, that some kind of Royal visit had already happened or was going to happen. It certainly is well flagged. ![The grain extra has some additional help on this sunny day with the beetle 9105 spliced between the 5607 and 5580. Amazing weather for the time of year, the winter of 87/88 had little snow. I can remember seeing people out on the golf course during Christmas week. This photo taken at mile 25.5, time approx. 15:30.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/CN-5607-200x150.jpg)

![A short Muskeg Mixed makes it easy to frame fit. :^) The units are fresh and crispy tonight. Looking into my notes, the 5517 I first spotted in stripes Sept.86 and the 5503 with hers in March 87. Lucky chance to have them both headed in the same direction. That is Baggage 7856, Coach 5095 and Caboose 79881 at the rear. It is just a short distance to the connecting track where the Lac La Biche Sub. will take the mixed train north.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/CN-5517-1-200x150.jpg)

![This unit train is returning back to Edmonton with 36 sulphur loads, scale test car CN52108 (it went up north on June 19th) and caboose 79286. The time is 19:00 and here is one of the few photos I shot at Gibbons. Except for a couple of tall hoppers in the middle, it is almost a solid train of short ones.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/CN-9167-04-200x150.jpg)

![While the crew goes in for dinner at 17:00, why not take a few sunny nose photo's. You can see the extent of the section work, all tracks have been newly ballasted. The section machines are parked on the elevator track, empty ballast cars on the main and units in the siding. Everyone is in at the Redwater Hotel. Many of the people who worked out in the field (oil field etc.) would pull up at the lunch or dinner hour, a favourite haunt.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/CN-9167-03-200x150.jpg)

![Nearly at the top of the hill from the Redwater river, 836 will soon be getting the switch at Kerensky to continue the trip to the air base. There must be a lot of flying scheduled, there are 34 tanks of fuel behind those 14 empty hoppers. You can see the 2 trailing units are working, even a little smoke from the 4345. For whatever reason (you can see the open hood door on the 4609), the lead unit on the way out, and, back again the next day, was not in operation. Nice quiet ride for the headend crew, just swooshing of air brakes. They are a little late today at 15:45, typically roll through just before lunch.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/CN-4609-5-200x150.jpg)

![Extra 4345, the grain peddler, is meeting 836 at Radway on a very foggy morning. Very lucky on this occasion, the little hole shone long enough until 836 arrived. You can see the edge of cloud coming by the silver hoppers. I find it interesting that GP38's trail both GP9's, 836 wyed their units with the 4290 leading when they returned later that evening.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/CN-4345-01-200x150.jpg)

![Empty hoppers on the way north to be filled again with sulphur chips. It is a very generous ditch between highway and railroad at this location. Makes getting the total length in the picture an easy task.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/CN-9171-2-200x150.jpg)

![584 is coming up the hill to the junction switch at Kerensky with an unbelievable train of boxcars. The units and cars create an impression of a time period much earlier than 1987. This train typically goes through town in the morning, how fortunate to have it come late at 18:30. Morning would have offered few spots for capturing a train this size.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/CN-1073-2-200x150.jpg)

![The grain extra is rounding the curve that will lead to the little hamlet of Coronado. Back at those times, having a GP9 in a GMD-1 consist was unusual. Glad I made the effort to go and catch the occasion, couldn't believe what I found when I arrived at my photo spot.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/CN-1065-200x150.jpg)

![Not only were f-units becoming hard to find in the summer of 1988, trios of GP9's also became hard subjects to photograph. There will be just a few more occurrences of GP9 trios between this date and May/89 when it came to an end. June 1989 saw a major share of railroading go to GP38's. On occasion, the re-built 4100's (infrequent) and 4000's (common) would be seen on trains. Two years later in Aug./90, I photo'd my last train on the Coronado. With over 90% of trains with GP38's, they all looked the same. The extra in this photo is just north of Edmonton at mile 6.7 at 11:30. It was nice having the rare visitor 4604 in the consist.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/CN-4290-01-200x150.jpg)
