![[Editors note: Photos of WP&Y freights are very rare online] While working in Whitehorse I took the time to drive down to Carcross with the idea of photographing the train station. While there I was lucky enough to catch a south bound train just as it entered town. The lead locomotive was #98. The sun was out. It was a perfect day to catch the action & the history while walking around town.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/WP-YR-98-Freight-@-Carcross-YT-82-08-13-J-W-Booth-Copy-1280x851-200x150.jpg)

![Knowing that the CP operations at the Drake St. yards were coming to an end my friend (Jack Lord) & I drove down to the yards on a nice sunny day. I remember that it was a Sunday & no work was taking place. We took as many photographs as we could till we ran out of film. In this case we spotted CP 8665 jacked up in the newer portion of the roundhouse, so being careful not to touch anything we took a couple of shots showing the locomotive as it sat there. The sad thing is that there was so much more to photograph & we missed it.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/CP-8665-@-Vancouver-BC-Sept-1981-J-W-Booth-1280x853-200x150.jpg)

![Acquired from O&W about one year earlier, BCR 746 (ex O&W 9953) was sitting in sun at the North Vancouver shops. ![[Editors note: understanding the quality of this is a bit shaky, but letting it in for historical interest] I really have to jog my memory about this site! I do know that it was early in 1981 when I took the time to walk around the site. CF 107 was sitting outside on the west side of the larger shop building. It had clearly been there for quite some time as the encroaching blackberry growth was moving closer. The day was overcast and damp, which was typical for that time of year. I took 3 pictures of the locomotive. I often wonder what type of support was under the hood to carry the weight of that bell?](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/CF-107-@-Ladysmith-BC-early-1980s-J-W-Booth-edited-200x150.jpg)

![No shopping trip to Lloydminster is complete without dropping over to CP & CN yards and seeing what action is taking place. In this case I photographed CP 3040 sitting by the yard office. In behind CP 3040 were CP 6012, CP 6023, & CP 9008. The camera is pointed east looking into Sask. If I had backed up about 200 ft. I could have taken the shot from Alberta. Couldn't have asked for better weather! A slight breeze & no mosquitos.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/CP-3040-@-Lloydminster-Sask.-1280x853-J-W-Booth-200x150.jpg)

![I was walking along the outside edge of the Quesnel BC yards, & caught the daily north bound passenger train as it started to leave town. The exterior of the cars were spotless, which showed to me that the BCR staff was proud of them. Always was a great place to take photographs of local BCR operations.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/BCR-BC-30-12-@-Quesnel-BC-88-04-30-J-W-Booth-1280x853-200x150.jpg)

![The CN train was stopped on the main line through Vegreville AB. An event that did not happen that much but when it did it sure annoyed the people traveling north or south through town. In this case, some of the crew had time to climb down from the locomotive,& obtain some goodies at the near by gas station. The temperature at the time was in excess -30c so I did not hang around to get any better shots. On the bright side there were no mosquitos to put up with!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/CN-9513-@-Vegreville-AB-05-01-04-J-W-Booth-1280x938-200x150.jpg)

![LMSX 2458 was sitting just outside the CN shops at Port Mann BC on what I call a will it or will it not day. Meaning is it going to rain or not going to rain. The unit was resting south of the shops when I first spotted it, but on this day it had been moved closer probably after being shopped. After showing your pass, or signing in there were only a few places near the shops where you could take photographs. I have no idea how long CN kept the unit under lease, but it was nice to see it.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/CN-LMSX-2458-@-Port-Mann-BC-26-Mar-2003-1526-hrs-1280x960-200x150.jpg)

![It was early in the morning when I visited the CN roundhouse area in London Ont. The area was enveloped in a heavy fog at the time. I was standing west of the roundhouse/yard office when I noticed some movement immediately south of the roundhouse. By pure luck I caught CN 2015 & CN 2031 dropping off a string of retired MLW yard engines. The MLW unites were CN 8221,8208,8232,8210,8219,8218,& 8229. They sat there for a few years, & I managed to photograph them more than once while visiting London my home town. If you grew up near Wellington & Bathurst Streets, rode the L&PS, you must be a rail fan!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/CN-2015-@-London-Ont-Oct-1982-x2-1280x853-Copy-200x150.jpg)

![An area that I visited frequently in the 1980's. At the time of the picture I was working in Abbotsford BC. so I made a 30K drive to Coquitlam to see what life was like near the old lumber mills. In the old days you could find CP & CN units sitting side by side at this location. To day it's all CP.& no lumber mills.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/CP-5017-5006-@-Fraser-Mills-BC-Aug-1994-J-W-Booth1280x853-200x150.jpg)

![CN 1003 was the last CN locomotive used on Vancouver Island. In this 1988 photograph the CN locomotive was sitting in the CP water front yards at Vancouver BC. She had just completed her last ferry ride between Vancouver Island and the lower mainland. Soon she will be off to the CN shops in Port Mann. Glad I took my camera to work on that day, & also with me on my lunch break. Today the whole area has changed. Very trendy now!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/CN-1003-@-Vancouver-BC-88-04-27-J-W-Booth-1280x838-200x150.jpg)

![This is one of two pictures I took of VIA 6213 on that day. The station had been repainted from the old CP red to the gray color. There were many people on the platform waiting to board the car for the trip south. Maybe even as far as Victoria. If I had taken this picture in the summer VIA would have two cars on the train. In the background you can see a CP locomotive sitting there. That would be CP 5015 & behind it would be one of the two CP twins, CP 5000. The two CP locomotives were sitting about as far north as they could get. They were at the end of the line!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/VIA-6213-@-Courtenay-BC-88-11-22-J-W-Booth-1280x853-200x150.jpg)

![While inspecting a roofing project at the Golden BC post office I had the advantage of keeping one eye on the nearby CP line through town. As soon as the Via train arrived at the old CP station I went over & photographed the lead unit & the first "B" unit behind it, and then as luck would have it I ran out of film. Not long after this VIA stopped running through Golden, Calgary, & many other towns in the western part of Canada.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/VIA-6301-@-Golden-BC-86-09-17-J-W-Booth-1280x838-200x150.jpg)

![This is the area of London Ont that I grew up in during the 1950's. Though much has changed the platforms & their canopies have remained. I had a signed release from the CN staff in the black tower, & after showing it to the CN police I walked over to the platform area & took a few photographs. It's always nice to get up close to rail activity in an area that is safe. Even the weather cooperated. It was a great & interesting day with many VIA trains coming & going.
One of my rules was to get permission to be on the property, never stand in the tracks or on the rails, never climb on the equipment, & only take pictures. Also be aware of all activity around you.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/VIA-6768-@-London-Ont-87-07-08-J-W-Booth-1280x841-200x150.jpg)

![This picture was taken on my first trip to Nelson BC in Oct 1981. For a fall day, the weather was great! This picture was taken from the side of highway which sits at a slightly higher elevation then the CP yards. Lots of activity going on. Never saw an FM unit, but did catch a "B" unit near the newer locomotive shops. The picture has a lot of lost history in it.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/CP-yards-8641-and-4451-@-Nelson-BC-Oct-1981-J-W-Booth-1280x847-200x150.jpg)

![The weather had closed in & it was snowing lightly, but that did not stop me. So I took what little free time I had while in Nelson & after parking on the airport side of the property I walked over to the old roundhouse area. The steam locomotive stalls were long gone, but the back shop area of the building was still there, as was the turntable. The lights were on in the building, but I have no idea what it was being used for. Sadly all is now long gone!](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/CP-RH-TT-@-Nelson-BC-10-Dec-1986-J-W-Booth-1280x853-Copy-200x150.jpg)

![Typical warm sunny day in Kamloops BC. When I was in or passing by Kamloops I always tried to visit the west end of the CP yards. Nice concrete platform to walk on, & lots of action. On this day CP GP-9 8636 was catching a little sun. The paint job looked a little faded, but that was normal for British Columbia based CP GP-9's in 1987.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/CP-8636-@-Kamloops-BC-87-09-29-J-W-Booth-Copy-1280x842-200x150.jpg)

![During the summer season VIA rail used two dayliners on the CP line between Victoria & Courtenay BC. During the off season only one dayliner was kept in operational. The stored car was kept nice & dry in the Victoria car shop. After the conclusion each days trip up island the operational car was maintained in the back shop area of the 1913 CP roundhouse. Chances are pretty good that rail operations on Vancouver Island are finished. As I like to say it "Death by politician."](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/VIA-6133-in-Victoria-BC-car-shop-Copy-1280x829-200x150.jpg)
