![In a fitting metaphor of what was to come, CN train 421 looms large over its much smaller G&W counterpart, both seen here doing the typical Stuart Street standoff on a pleasant Saturday morning in October. As of midnight tonight, CN resumes control of operations here. Their power has begun to show up, with CN 4762, GMTX 2248, GMTX 2264, and CN 7058 now taking up residence in the yard.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_6729-2a-200x150.jpg)

![It has been over half a year since I've seen a daylight 550, so I was pretty excited to hear one asking for clearance this morning to head from Aldershot to Parkdale. Caught them splitting the searchlights at Wentworth and then saw them again at Parkdale Yard as I awaited the arrival of 421.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_7814-2a-200x150.jpg)

![The belt line jobs waits in Strathearne Yard for things to clear on the other side of Parkdale Ave, where loaders at American Iron and Metal were working furiously to load a couple more gons that were clogging up the access. Once loaded, AIM's trackmobile moved them out of the way and CP was able to do the switch. The delay allowed me to take a few shots which was fortunate. The conditions were sunny but the smoke pouring out of Columbian Carbon to the south was casting streaky shadows on the power depending how the wind was blowing.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_7732a-200x150.jpg)

![The sun had just came out about five or ten minutes earlier, presenting me with the opportunity to get a shot of a smoky 4003 heading out of the hole with some hoppers and well cars from NSC. The smoke only got heavier as they approached Ferguson Ave, leaving one motorist rather perplexed as to what they had just driven into. With not much in the way of a breeze today, it hung in the air long after the train was back in Stuart.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_7660-5a-200x150.jpg)

![An almost exclusive parade of toasters today on the Watrous, but I didn't let that get in the way of me having a great time. Caught over a dozen trains during daylight hours, which far exceeds a typical day in Southern Ontario.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_7458-2a1-200x150.jpg)

![It was my first chase of 514 and it had been raining hard all day, so we were thrilled when the rain finally stopped and a little sun appeared. Here, 514 has finished work at Thamesville and is crossing the Thames River on its way back to Chatham. Hoppers from Blenheim are on the head end.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_1678-2b-200x150.jpg)

Here, 3394, 3403, and 3054 are about to pass under Jones Baseline as they continue the eastward march on the Guelph Sub.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_7129a-200x150.jpg)

![Here, the Garnet power (3049, 6908 and 3404) is pictured building their train for Nanticoke. I love the look of G&W units under foreboding skies. While it looked like it was going to storm that day, it never did. I stuck with them all the way down to Stelco before calling it a day.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_4336-2-200x150.jpg)

![We'd chased an X597 north from Garnet to Brantford already this day (seen here) and were on our way to Paris to meet up with it there when we picked up 2111 on the scanner. Figuring out pretty quickly what that meant, we turned around and went back to Brantford. We were coming down Colborne heading for Clarence when we saw hoppers shoving through the intersection. With no time to spare, this one is actually shot out of the passenger window of my friend's pickup truck.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/IMG_2142_edited-200x150.jpg)

![I was heading back to Hamilton at the end of the day after a meeting in Burlington, and decided to pass by Stuart to see if anything was going on. Got there just in time to see the tail end of a cut of cols leaving the yard, headed towards the N&NW Spur. They dropped their cars west of Wentworth and ran light power eastward as pictured here. They returned not too long after with a string of tanks. I wondered at the time where those came from, but looking back at it I think a reasonable guess would be the interchange. I love this part of the N&NW Spur, where the crossings are packed in tight and mechanical bells still reign supreme.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IMG_1229a-200x150.jpg)

![On a day where it went from raining to sunny to raining and back again more times than I can count, I did at least get some sun for TH31's return trip to Kinnear. 2288 is leading on the trip back, pictured here on the Beach Branch, soon to merge back onto the Belt Line (pictured in the foreground).
I owe a credit to Steve's many shots of industrial Hamilton, such as this one , which have helped me learn a bit about what I am actually seeing (i.e. Beach Branch vs Belt Line).](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IMG_6779c-200x150.jpg)

![Cries of "hot rail!" filled the air as X422 approached the gang working at mile 43 of the Grimsby Sub.I had caught wind of the X422 a little less than an hour earlier, when I heard this MOW crew talking to RTC. As I waited, I was pacing impatiently on Ferguson Avenue, watching the shadows get longer and wondering if I may lose the chance at a shot I had been imagining for a few months now. A sole ES44DC brought a dozen cars from Port Rob in the late afternoon sun. It may have worked in my favour that it was a short train, as they made pretty good time from St. Catharines to Hamilton.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IMG_6673-raw-200x150.jpg)

![Planned to spend the entirety of the 29th railfanning. Went out that morning, grabbed a coffee, and got going just in time for the lighting to start getting nice. First stop was the industrial area, starting around Bunge and working eastward. Stumbled upon SOR and CP both working the interchange. 2117 had been out of service for some time and only recently returned in the days before this shot. If you look closely, it looks like the engineer in 2117 is either hiding from the low morning sun or my camera. Or both. From here, 2117 would run long hood/light power to NSC where it lifted some SPMX hoppers (for Shell I believe) and CN centrebeams before returning to this area to double its train and head back to Stuart. The Belt Line job headed onward towards Strathearne. Seems to be pretty consistent (or lucky?) that I have been finding CP in the Ottawa Street North area Saturday mornings around 08:00/08:30 or so.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IMG_6177_edited2-200x150.jpg)

![I checked out Port Rob for the first time last month. When I got there, these three units were working together. Soon after, they split the power with 2679 and another unit being assigned to L562 and the cowl being assigned to L531 (I think? or L530?). They would sit like this while the crew took their lunch break, which allowed me to catch a southbound CP train on the Stamford Sub (Burger Road crossing) before heading back towards Brookfield to catch both of these trains on the move.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IMG_6241-200x150.jpg)

!["Heavy Equipment Crossing" on Ottawa Street North in Hamilton. I was actually heading to catch them at Main and Gage when I saw them in my rearview mirror and it reminded me of Steve's shot with the Dofasco sign in it. Of course, that sign is gone now and the structure has changed, but it is still a neat sight to see them working the yard like this. So I pulled over near the Grimsby Sub and snapped a shot before heading along.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IMG_6101_edited-200x150.jpg)

![I was driving from Thunder Bay to the Sault on this day, and really hoped to catch a train at Little Pic River. As I was driving through Schreiber, I picked up an eastbound on the scanner talking to RTC, so luck was on my side. Got well ahead of it though and ended up waiting an hour and a half at Little Pic River for it. That's ok, the scenery was nice enough. It was pretty overcast that day but the sun peaked out long enough for this shot.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IMG_5420_edited-200x150.jpg)

![I think I was out nearly every night around the summer equinox. This particular June evening presented me with perfect lighting for the critter working NSC. I chased an SOR job that evening too, but it was going in the wrong direction to take advantage of these gorgeous conditions.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IMG_3448-200x150.jpg)
