![GEXR 581 is pictured here in Goderich running around its one remaining hopper (others had been set off along the way) so that it can shove down the grade to the Port. I provided a fulsome description of operations for the day in another shot of them down at the Port, available <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36037">here</a> if anyone is interested in a recap.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/IMG_8461-200x150.jpg)

![Shortly after working <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36583">Stelco</a>, the 0700 Yard Job headed over to MANA to lift one gon. The gates across Burlington Street were wreaking havoc on traffic all day, continuously going off whether or not a train was nearby. The crew member in the shot is trying to address the issue, without luck. Eventually, city police were called to block off the ground level road and keep cars to the overpass only. <br><br>I managed to catch CP once here too, shown in <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=34824">this shot</a>, but in hindsight I wish I had composed that image a bit better. I was still fairly new to this hobby and was largely focused on shooting the power instead of the scene. A few people I have spoken with had never seen SOR here previously or CN presently, so I don't think it's a move that is made very often, and was likely a nighttime move with SOR. <br><br>Even being a local I managed three personal firsts on this day: CN at Stelco (link above), CN at MANA, and CN at P&H (shown <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36588">here</a>). Industrial Hamilton can be a fun place with a lot of interesting opportunities for shots.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/IMG_9344-200x150.jpg)

![LTEX 1001, the switcher at Oxy Vinyls in Port Robinson, is pictured here shoving a cut of plastic pellet hoppers across Thorold Townline Rd into the plant property. There is what I am assuming to be an interchange point between the plant and CN on the west side of the road and the switcher shuttles hoppers back and forth. I saw it make a few trips between the plant and the interchange on this day, in what was a rather busy day for me railfanning-wise. There are a couple of trackmobiles within the plant property itself as well.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9133-200x150.jpg)

![Things seemed pretty busy for Trillium when I was down in the area earlier this month. After shooting <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36412">564 rescuing 538/meeting 143 at Robbins</a>, I found Trillium working Feeder Yard around 0900, building a train of grain hoppers for Port Colborne. They departed not long after, working WH Yard briefly along the way. This yard too had quite a few grain hoppers kicking around in it. Making the slow and steady trek south to the Port, they made a setoff of grain hoppers at the old Robin Hood mill that originated off of CP. There, they lifted CN-originated hoppers off of a siding for the Port Colborne Grain Terminal and/or ADM (I am not sure which they were for, or perhaps both). It was a really windy day, and unfortunately the wind was doing its best from preventing me getting a really smoky ALCO shot. Later that day I would see CP drop another big string of grain hoppers for Trillium at Feeder Yard, shown <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36426">here</a>.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9096-200x150.jpg)

![I was able to somewhat finish work early yesterday and caught the <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36583">0700 job at Stelco</a> around midday, which was a feat in and of itself to me. I had a couple conference calls yet to make though, so I went home to handle those. When I was out earlier, it looked like to me from what I could see in both Stuart and P&H itself that P&H would be getting serviced later on so I thought I would go back out after the calls just in case. <br><br>Shortly after 3pm I went back out and first came across 1400 yard job busy working Stuart with 4781 and 4713. 4781 is the beltpack-equipped unit and was evidently having some recurring wheel slip issues ("4-7-8-1-A severe wheel slip, out"). Not long after getting to Stuart the 1500 crew got in their power, which was the same power as the 0700 crew. It still had the 0700's drag behind it (including a completely unpainted three-pack of well cars out of NSC) so they took that down to the far west end of the yard and returned light. They and tacked onto the western side of four hoppers (three of which were P&H-owned) and then called for a light down the hole. <br><br>They shoved from Stuart all the way to P&H, where I had now been waiting for a bit of time. They tied onto the three hoppers already at P&H and shoved those further in, along with the four they brought on this day. The next move was to head over to Bunge to lift meal hoppers, but by this point I had to go. The ship pictured right - the Algoma Transport - is at Bunge for the winter. It has a load of canola for them all winter, and it gets a place to dock for the off-season. <br><br>If anyone is wondering, I think P&H is typically a late afternoon move. Mark MacCauley <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35804">previously shot SOR</a> here on their last day of operations in Hamilton.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9382-200x150.jpg)

![I was out earlier today on account of being able to finish work early for the week with some lieu time, and happened across the 0700 job out and about down the hole in Hamilton. I thought they were heading back to Stuart but they never showed up at Birch Ave where I was waiting, so I went back out hunting and found them at Stelco of all places. This was another nighttime move under SOR that I never witnessed. Here's hoping that, like <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35990">Parkdale Warehousing</a>, this is now daylight under CN too. I chose this shot because of the smile for the camera.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9341-200x150.jpg)

![It was a temperamental day weather and lighting-wise. The day started gorgeous with open skies and lots of sun. I had originally followed <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36508">CP 143</a> to the area under pristine conditions, and was now hanging around Port Rob watching 422 stretch out of the yard over Allanport Road as they built their train. It was mostly cloudy and windy at this point, and I sat in my car in a parking lot across the road waiting for a moment of sun, which finally did come. They departed Port Rob not long thereafter, with the SD70M-2 and C40-8W towing a hefty 11,500 feet of train behind them. From what I was told, 394 may have had to make part of 422's lift from Aldershot this day.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9240-200x150.jpg)

![CN L562 had just departed Port Rob, and is seen here shortly after some brief work at Southern Yard. They are headed for the Hamilton Sub to access Feeder Yard to interchange with Trillium. I don't know too much about Trillium's operations and customers - can anyone please tell me who gets gons from them? I often see the second gon on this train (or ones just like it) on 421/422 and have always wondered where they go. It had an SLMX reporting mark.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9272-200x150.jpg)

![I was out in Hamilton near Stuart Yard and heard 143 getting clearance from Park to Brookfield East, then looked over and saw the stacks over around the Bayview area. With Stuart being dead I figured I'd try something new so off to Smithville I went for a shot of 143 on a beautiful, sunny winter morning.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9205-200x150.jpg)

![With SOR turning the Hagersville Sub back over to CN the next day, I had a hunch we may be seeing the last 598 too even though they weren't turning Hamilton operations back over for another few months. I had the scanner stream on all day and heard that they had headed to Brantford, so after work I went to York Blvd and staked them out for what I thought may be a somewhat interesting location to see them. Rob Smith also managed to capture this train in Brantford - his shot can be seen <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35115">here</a>.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_5886-200x150.jpg)

![I've been told by a crew member that the pushing on the Hamilton Sub typically takes place at night these days - for 142 and 247 I think. However, both trains have been running late at times recently with the winter weather, making for a chance to see the pushers on the mainline on their way to help. Which is lucky for me - I missed a shot of 142 here by mere minutes but then heard the pushers would be coming once the crew was ready to go. Here, TH41 is on its way to meet a very late and waiting 142 at Desjardins. This was the 15:00 crew's first order of business on this Sunday afternoon. <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36367">254 would follow southbound</a> mere minutes after TH41 passed through.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9007-200x150.jpg)

![What was being referred to by the crew itself and RTC as "Work 2319" is pictured here dropping a healthy cut of grain hoppers for Trillium at Feeder Yard. I came across them working Welland yard with this cut and not long after took off down the Hamilton Sub for Brookfield Siding, and then backed onto the Cayuga Spur into Feeder Yard as shown here. I'm told CP recently had a unit grain train come to the area - all traffic for Port Colborne. From my own observations this day, I believe these cars are going to the old Robin Hood mill. There were CP grain hoppers all over the place though - CP Welland Yard, Feeder Yard, WH Yard, and at the Robin Hood mill itself. Things were seemingly busy down at the Grain Terminal and ADM as well with what appeared to be traffic originating off of CN. It was a cold day with incredibly bitter winds that kept bringing with them spurts of blowing snow and flurries, as evidenced in this photo and my previous shot of 564.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9156-2-200x150.jpg)

![I was on my way to Niagara to do some exploring there, and had my scanner on just in case. As I neared, I heard CP 143 talking to CN RTC about getting clearance for the Stamford Sub. RTC told them that 538 (which looks like it was 2009 solo) was having locomotive issues and 564 was on their way to help. 143 was first held on the connecting track at Brookfield Road while 564 made its way over to 538 which was somewhere between Robbins East and Duff. After it had passed, 143 then got clearance onto the Stamford and held on the siding as 564 (I assume it was now 564?) made its way to Port Robinson. You can just see the tail end of 143 through the flurries in this shot.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9049-200x150.jpg)

![I was out doing my usual in the north end of Hamilton - the 0700 CN job was down the hole and TH31 was about to join the fray as well. From the scanner I could tell it was pretty busy over on the mainline, and soon I heard mention of 149 at Tansley. Given that I rarely, if ever, see westbound stacks (I missed all those X187s and I'm never typically out late enough for 149) I got over to Snake as quickly as I could as I thought this could be a fun change of pace. When I got there I was worried I had missed it, but after maybe five minutes or so the headlights appeared. I zoomed in to see what was coming at me and saw a couple cowls on approach and was pretty happy I'd made the choice to check it out. I got my shots and then not long after got the word out that there was an awfully nice 149 coming for anyone else west of here.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_8935-200x150.jpg)

![With GEXR starting each morning in Stratford and heading west from there, you need to start to think a little outside the box for shots as most everything will be back lit. For most of the morning, it was clouded over and there were no issues (at least with respect to back lighting). But as GEXR 581 neared Seaforth, the sun started to peak through the sky. A little unsure what to do, and with the train nearing, I figured I'd at least try for something interesting so I put the wide angle lens on and scampered to the south side of the crossing. I am quite grateful the sun did come out for a bit, as it allowed for a nice shot at the Port of Goderich where they shoved one car down to the Port, which can be viewed <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36037">here</a> (along with a description of the day's operations).](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_8429-2-200x150.jpg)

![I wasn't intending on taking this shot - I was in the area solely to shoot northbound pushers who had just passed through on their way to push a waiting (and very late) 142. After I shot the pushers and got back to my car, I heard CEFX 1033 south at Desjardins and scurried over to Queen Street as I had been thinking about maybe trying a time machine photo with <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=34622">Arnold Mooney's shot</a> of a southbound just west of tunnel on the Hamilton Sub. Unfortunately, the trees on Queen Street are so grown in with branches everywhere that it's currently impossible to reproduce the angle and show that much sky. It took a little telephoto to get past the branches for this one.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_9014-200x150.jpg)

![<b>A final shove goodbye.</b> It was SOR's last day, but still a day of a couple firsts for me. SOR called for a light down the hole, mid-morning I think it was. 4001 was on point, with a bulkhead and a boxcar up front, followed by a decent string of hoppers for P&H and 2500 bringing up the rear. They split the train near Bunge's EOF (explained <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36225">here</a>) with 4001 continuing onward to Parkdale Warehousing and 2500 heading over to clear a switch and shove into P&H. Naturally, I had wanted to shoot both for some time but had yet to shoot either. And with it being SOR's last day it was now or never for both. I did manage to get shots at both, along with Mark MacCauley whose shot at P&H can be seen <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35804">here</a>. <br> <br> After grabbing shots at P&H I got over to Parkdale Warehousing as quickly as I could. After all, this had always been a nighttime switch according to a crew member I spoke to that day, and I really wanted to see how they made the move with such little headroom to work with. 4001 took the bulkhead and boxcar over there, and proceeded to lift the three empties one at a time, spotting them next to the road, before spotting the two loads next to the unloading platform. This switch was performed differently than how I witnessed CN do it a few weeks later, also explained <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35990">here</a>. <br> <br> Given the nature of the operation at Parkdale Warehousing and how SOR performed the switch, the only somewhat decent shot I was able to get was of them shoving away, heading westward with the three empties as pictured here. In a way, the shot is a fitting metaphor for their final day of operations in Hamilton. I was sick as a dog this day, but it was going to take a lot more than a bad cold to keep me from one last chase.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_7870a-2-200x150.jpg)

![There is a relatively new pedestrian overpass in London that offers a decent vantage point of the Dundas. I was in town to see one of my favourite bands - The Constantines - on back-to-back nights at Call The Office, so figured I'd get a bit of railfanning in despite the cold. After all, I had surprisingly never really railfanned in London before aside from a few grab shots of interesting hoppers over at Quebec Street one day. I am glad we picked this location for 331, as I feel the location does justice to that nice string of coils up front. There is something about a big cut of coil cars that I really enjoy. I'd definitely recommend this spot, especially when the weather warms.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/331-200x150.jpg)
