![One of the new CN blower trucks was out first thing Saturday morning clearing switches in the yard at Stratford before the crew of GEXR 581 reported for duty. Pictured here, 581 is on its way to grab five hoppers from a much longer cut in the yard. The hoppers would be set of at Broadgrain Commodities east of Seaforth from where they would head light to <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36245">Hensall</a>. For anybody wondering, as of Saturday, the plow was still sitting at the FS Partners east of Mitchell. There were some fairly sizable drifts on both the Goderich and Exeter Subs, but 581 just shoved through those on its own. Unfortunately, action on the Goderich Sub was backlit with the early morning departure, and they took the Exeter Sub so slowly that even the bigger drifts were mowed over without much in the way of flying snow.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_8769-200x150.jpg)

![More snow fell last night, making for the second Sunday in a row with fresh snow and nice sunny skies. Before entering the yard, 331 spoke with the trainmaster to make sure the yard crews were out of the way. Lucky for me, the one crew on duty at the time was having their lunch and their power (4781 and 4713) was tied down allowing for this shot. 330 and 331 seem to be pretty reliable for having interesting power.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_8919-3-200x150.jpg)

![Lake Huron was certainly calling the shots today in terms of the weather on the Goderich and Exeter Subs. One minute, it would be sunny with blue skies, the next it would be totally clouded over and snowing, and the next it would be cloudy to the north with strong sun at the south. When 581 reached Hensall, it was the latter. Today, GEXR ran west from Stratford with five hoppers, dropping them at Broadgrain Commodities east of Seaforth. From there, there ran light power to Clinton Jct where they then took the Exeter Sub continuing light to Hensall. Pictured here, they are lifting one boxcar in Hensall that would be taken to Exeter. From here, they continued the journey south to Exeter and switched out this boxcar for another and headed back towards Clinton. Seemed like an awful lot of work to swap out one boxcar for another. It's roughly 60 miles round trip from Broadgrain to Exeter, and the Exeter Sub is slow going - especially with all of the snow drifts. With wages and fuel, it was hard to make sense of this one.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_8858-200x150.jpg)

![It's no secret that overcast days have a silver lining and let you shoot angles that would otherwise be back lit. On May 6, I took the opportunity to do just that. SOR had called for a light down the hole and was headed for Bunge with empty tanks for the Edible Oil Facility (known to staff there as EOF - it is on the south side of Burlington Street east of Victoria Ave and is where the finished oil is loaded into tanks) and hoppers for loading soybean meal on the north side of the street. After dropping the tanks they shoved back west of Victoria Ave to clear the switch, and headed northbound towards Burlington Street as pictured here. If you are familiar with the area, the soybean meal hoppers are the ones you see east of Victoria Ave in front of Vopak, and hoppers on the bayside of the plant are loads of raw product such as canola. The soybean meal is the byproduct of the oilseed crushing and is used for animal feed. 4001 was trailing on this day, though you wouldn't be able to tell in the shot.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_1354-2a-200x150.jpg)

![A look at Stuart Street post-CN resuming operations here. At bottom, a couple of crew members work the remote operated power outside in the bitter cold (-20C wind chill) as they switch the yard in preparation for the imminent arrival of 422 and later 331, both of which had work to do at Stuart. The switches in the yard have been cleared by crews working through the night and well into the day, after Hamilton got dumped on with over 20cm of snow. Compared with this <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35798">shot</a> in October 2018 when SOR was switching the yard and serving the industrial customers, the yard seems much more spacious now with more room on the ladder tracks, and has looked the way for much of the time that has followed the CN takeover. The long string of hoppers (where the second from the front is blue) are Nova Chemicals hoppers which have been sitting in the yard for several weeks now; something I can't say I ever observed in the past. These hoppers are commonplace on 330/331 (for OxyVinyls east of Port Rob I believe - perhaps someone can confirm), and sometimes on 421/422 as well.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_8746-200x150.jpg)

![Well file this day under unique. 331 had just worked both Parkdale Yard and Stuart street, and is pictured here shoving off the cowpath through Snake into Aldershot to make a lift there too. Can't say this is a move I've ever seen before. The Parkdale thing threw me off enough as it was. From what I can gather from observation and from what I am hearing from others, 422 dropped a unit there (potentially its leader - 8943) and some cars I think, and at the very least 331 lifted its leader (and maybe the cars?) which became its third unit. 422 worked Stuart while 331 was in Parkdale, and then 422 worked Aldershot while 331 was in Stuart. You can see the tail end of 422 sticking out of Aldershot in this shot. It's the unique and unusual that make things interesting for us railfans, that's for sure.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_8761-200x150.jpg)

![With my plans to chase GEXR today gone with this snowstorm, I thought I'd post a flashback to a hot summer's day. Humidex values were well into the 30s on this August afternoon, and just like pretty much every other day this past summer, the SOR crews had the door wide open trying to find any relief from the heat they could. I never did get to see a true Nanticoke steel train, and something like this is probably about as close as I will ever get to anything resembling one. SOR dropped the refinery traffic north of concession four for their ESSO switchers to lift, and proceeded south with QGRY 2500 and RLHH 3404 towing a string of coil cars for Stelco. The heat and sun were a bit too much this day and I called it once they entered the gates to Stelco.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_4520-2a-200x150.jpg)

![I had caught 431 earlier that afternoon in the Rockwood area and headed west with it in hopes of maybe trying to get it again. After all, I had never even caught it before that day and GEXR's days running from Mac Yard to Stratford were numbered. As most of you know, this is not an easy one to keep up with, so with work in Kitchener I decided to just get out ahead of it and hope for the best. As I waited west of Shakespeare, daylight was quickly fading and I was getting worried I wouldn't get another chance at it. However, I finally I heard them on approach and got the ISO cranked for one more shot. Given Stephen's recent <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36140">post</a> of CN 568 at Shakespeare, I thought seeing GEXR 431 here as well might be of interest to people also.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_7108-2a-200x150.jpg)

![Having grown up in Norfolk County, it always bothered me that I didn't have a shot of a train on home soil. Even in the way of memories of trains in Norfolk, I have very few: I remember a CN wayfreight going through town on the Cayuga Sub in Simcoe as a kid, I remember hearing them blowing for a crossing in Nixon once when we were visiting family friends (and me being sad that I was missing a train), I remember seeing lights way in the distance on the CASO once when passing over top on highway 24 (I was always sure to quickly look both ways as we passed over) in what was likely during the era when CSX was running trains from Detroit to Buffalo, and I remember seeing the St. Thomas and Eastern coming through town a number of times when I spent a couple summers working in Delhi. But unfortunately, I did not have a shot to capture any of these memories.
All that changed today when I caught OSR in Courtland. It was a mostly overcast day, however the clouds were kind enough to part ever so slightly for a brief moment to shine some light on the train for a couple of shots as they lifted a few empties and dropped a couple of loads. Interestingly, there is a new owner of the facility in Courtland and rail service seems to have picked up. For now, they are slowly working their way through 40 carloads being shuttled back and forth from the interchange in St. Thomas and further to London. I would be guessing if I said this carries long-term promise, but one can always hope.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_8665-200x150.jpg)

![I can't say I ever shoot much on the CP mainline, mostly because activity is infrequent and the power is usually mundane. I did however want to get a shot of a train coming into the Hunter Street tunnel and a train coming out of the tunnel, and I managed to do both on June 10. Here, 8910 leads 255 into the tunnel with the former TH&B Station in the background. I find it hard to believe this tunnel used to be double track. Sure would have been fun to watch the TH&B geeps ply these rails.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_3197-2-200x150.jpg)

![GEXR ran out to Goderich today, departing Stratford this morning with one grain hopper (presumably), four salt loads, and about eight or so Potash Corp hoppers. The salt was set off in Seaforth at Smith Packaging (which seems like a rather interesting operation), the potash in Clinton, leaving one hopper for the trip to Goderich. They ran around their train at the station, and shoved the lonely hopper down the hill to the Port of Goderich. They set it off a little past the switch that it is sitting on in the picture. I believe it was for the elevator in the Port, as it was not one of the two bay hoppers typically seen at the mine, but rather a three bay rib-sided hopper. We got the impression that they were expecting to lift loads from the salt mine, but as you can see none were ready for them, so they departed light for the return trip to Stratford. It looked as if they were contemplating work at the elevator east of Mitchell on the way back, but continued without making a lift there either, making for an entirely light power run from Goderich to Stratford.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_8478-200x150.jpg)

![One of CN's new GEVOs is on point as 119 crosses the South Saskatchewan River on a cold November afternoon, continuing its journey westward after a brief stop in Saskatoon. Something I am sure we can all relate to: I was nowhere near this location when I heard them beginning their conversation with RTC about departing, but knew I wanted to get at least one shot on the bridge while I was there. So it was somewhat of a scramble using Google Maps on my phone to identify a spot, drive over, and then walk/run down a hilly and snow covered trail to this location. But, I made it in time, and as we all know, that's what matters most.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_7314-200x150.jpg)

![The 07:00 yard job has finished up at Parkdale Warehousing and will soon be heading back to Stuart Street. This is the last stretch of track and furthest customer on the N&NW Spur here in Hamilton, and is a location in which I have not seen shots of in the public realm before (either SOR or CN), though I am sure they do exist. I myself have a few shots of the one time I witnessed SOR switch this customer, but I have not yet posted them anywhere. Under SOR, this was a predominantly nighttime job, although I did get lucky and witnessed it in daylight the one time. When I saw SOR do it, they came in with one unit (4001) and two loads: a bulkhead and a boxcar. They used the minimal headroom (check it out on Google Maps - it really is minimal!) to lift the three empties one at a time, placing them adjacent to Parkdale Ave, before spotting the loads. CN however came in light power with two units, lifted the empties and shoved them towards Adams Yard (dropping them in the area between Strathearne Ave/Dominion Rd and Kenilworth - not sure if this is considered Adams Yard or not, so if you know please enlighten me). They then grabbed the two loads and came back to spot them before heading back westward light power to grab the empties they'd just lifted. This is how I always imagined this move taking place and was caught off guard the day I caught SOR here. Perhaps under CN this has become a predominantly daytime move and something others will be able to get shots of as time goes on.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_8333-200x150.jpg)

![This is an angle I have done before, even recently with a <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35697">smoky 4003</a>. However, I had yet to have a good opportunity at shots of CN since they assumed Hamilton operations from SOR on December 14 and this is one of the more noteworthy angles the N&NW has to offer with respect to stamping the location as Hamilton. Here, the 07:00 yard job has finished its work down the hole for the day and is led back to Stuart Street by 7058 - a beltpack-equipped unit. For those wondering, all of power sets for CN in Hamilton so far have been beltpack-equipped. The three boxcars upfront are from Parkdale Warehousing, and a lone tank brought up the rear. I am still adjusting to the fact that I won't find SOR switching out there in the north end anymore.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_8350-2-200x150.jpg)

![2117 is on point as three 4-axle units work the yard in Garnet on a beautiful early spring day. 3403 had recently been sent to the GEXR, 3404 had been sent to Railcare in Hamilton a couple of days prior, and 6908 was still a little ways away from joining the fray - making for a brief window with no 6-axle units kicking around Garnet during this particular era of SOR. The previous day saw just the two trailing units pictured here (2111 and 3049) working the yard long hood forward.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_0205_edited-2-200x150.jpg)

I love dirt roads and crossings protected only by crossbucks; it has a certain appeal that to me is hard to beat. 1400 and 1594 headed directly to CAMI on this day, their first back after a bit of a break for Christmas.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_8128-200x150.jpg)

![331 crosses the Grand River in Paris on a beautiful Fall afternoon, with a string of new well cars from NSC on the head end. This was a shot I had hoped to do for some time before this, and we'd come here in the hopes of catching 550's power helping 385 along after it stalled going up the hill. However, 385's head end stopped short of Paris Junction and 550 dropped off somewhere between the bridge and Brantford. We'd settle on a nice, bright 331 instead, which followed shortly after.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_6615-200x150.jpg)

!["It's beginning to look vaguely like Christmas." I was driving from Hamilton to Simcoe earlier today for family Christmas celebrations and turned the scanner on once I got a bit outside of the city in hopes of coming across 580 somewhere along the way. When I got closer to Caledonia I started to pick up some chatter and sure enough, I soon found them switching Nicholson & Cates in what was a first-time catch for me. The Town's holiday decorations on the lamp post worked well with the light dusting of snow that was falling at the time.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_8086-2-200x150.jpg)

![I'd set out in the morning north from Saskatoon towards Prince Albert, being told that Carlton Trail might be running that day. I bumped into a friendly maintainer around Duck Lake who told me there would be no trains, so after chatting for a bit I turned around for the long, defeated trip back to Saskatoon. When I got to Warman I decided to detour a bit and head to the west side of Saskatoon and just check things out given everything was new to me anyways. When I got towards the Watrous Sub, this massive elevator unexpectedly appeared (it is so new it is not even on Google Maps yet), and luckily for me, a train was being loaded there. This was quite the sight to watch for a few hours in between catching mainline freights on the Watrous, as it is a rather interesting setup there. The track is a massive loop that can accommodate the loading of a full-sized unit grain train, and they just keep shoving back around the loop one car at a time until the entire train is loaded. I know, I'd rather have caught something at an old prairie sentinel, but for someone from Southern Ontario, this was still quite the treat.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_7392a-200x150.jpg)

![Things seem to be relatively busy down in Blenheim the last little while. Here, 514 has just finished tacking on the ten empties it brought down the Sarnia Spur to the three already on site at Thompsons, and is shoving back to make the set off. Afterwards, they lifted ten loads for the return trip north to Chatham, where they grabbed a couple of potash loads for Agris in Thamesville. I am very happy to see there is still life on the Sarnia Spur.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_7929-2a-200x150.jpg)
