About Paul O'Shell


Started my railroad career at CN in July 1969 and retired from the industry 49 years later on March 1, 2018. My area of expertise was railway MoW Work Equipment. Reside in Kelowna, BC. I use a Nikon D850 full frame & Nikon D7200 (Nikkor 24-70mm, 24-120mm, 35mm, 18-140mm, 55-300mm, & 80-400mm) and scan with an Epson V550. Enjoy my contributions. Be safe. The exterior of CN 50948 is as dated and beat up as the cab interior shot I previously submitted. It has been quite some time since the wheels have rolled and the plow blades have touch the ballast for this spreader.

In August 2002 I captured the retired ONR Tee Train on the deadline in ONR's North Bay yard. http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=5700#sthash.cvqIL53y.dpuf I have managed to get a shot of these remaining cars every few years since. On a business trip to ONR this month, I once again came across the last remaining cars from the Tee Train set. 15 years later, one power car and one coach are unceremoniously dumped on the ground in a fenced compound at the end of a public parking lot off Oak Street in downtown North Bay. This trainset has clearly gone from bad to worse over the years. I wonder what, if anything I will find on my next trip.

All the comforts of home can be found in the cab of CN 50948 Jordan Spreader. Comfortable seating, a warming oil fired heater with lunch warmer, radio, panoramic windows, overhead lighting, air circulation fan, and a plethora of spare parts, oil, and other necessities to keep it all running. Railroading is not always the glamorous environment viewed from the side of the tracks.

GEXR 3393 and her freshly painted sister GEXR 3394 have made up their train in L Yard at CN's Mac Yard in Concord, ON and are waiting for the rest of the crew walk up to the head-end before departing for points west.

Further to Mr. Mooney's August 9, 1985 photo from the backside of CN's Hornepayne station, here is what it looked liked from the front side 16 years later in December 2001. The absence of tenants, heat and caretakers has certainly taken its toll on the once busy structure. I am sure that in 2015, 14 years after this shot, the station and attached buildings must be a total disaster. The shop building (behind me) was still active in 2001 when I was there commissioning a new snow fighting machine. It stored CN vehicles, some work equipment machines, and a few pieces of rolling stock required for emergency purposes, and, the under roof turntable was still functioning. The town, the station, the shops and yard are but a shadow of themselves from when I lived and worked there in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Hornepayne has become but another casualty of the bigger, better, stronger, faster, more reliable trains, track, and service personnel across the system. Although that is a sad commentary, it is a good thing for railroading.

A 7 coach Turbo Train is exiting Toronto Union Station on the way to the Spadina Avenue roundhouse on a gloomy overcast fall 1976 afternoon. It is almost nose-to-nose with the painted mural at the base of the CN Tower featured in one of my earlier submissions. Note the nose of the locomotive still sports the red CN logo applied during the transition from CN passenger service to the then new VIA Rail service. 39 years later, a sparsely populated lake front is no longer the case. The parking lot is also gone, giving way to construction of L'Hotel, the Metro Toronto Convention Center, and a new CN Regional Headquarters office building in the next decade. Once again my 76' Road Runner has snuck into the bottom of the frame. My thanks to Dan Dell'Unto for having the patience, and for taking the time to correct this photo enough to make it acceptable to put on RP.ca

The final shot in the Turbo Trilogy is the unobstructed mural on the concrete retainer wall at the base of the CN Tower. The young couple walking through the parking lot turn to see the real Turbo as is whines out of Union Station on its way to Spadina shops.

Art is imitating life as a VIA Rail Turbo Train set moves from Toronto Union Station to the Spadina Avenue maintenance facility on an overcast early fall 1976 afternoon. The painting of a steam engine, diesel locomotive and a Turbo Train once adorned the poured concrete retaining wall at the base of the CN Tower. The waterfront skyline in the background, and most of the automobiles in the foreground are unrecognizable today. My brand new 1976 Plymouth Road Runner is hiding in the trees at the lower left corner of the photo. My brand new CN office at 277 Front St. W. along with the Metro Toronto Convention Center are almost a decade away from being completed on the very spot where I took this photo. Almost 40 years later, the Turbo Train, the wall painting, the Road Runner, and the CN office are all gone.

GEXR 3054 sure gets around! After seeing Jacob Patterson's August 7th photo and then Steve Host's August 11th photo, I couldn't resist submitting this August 13th photo I took at CN's Mac Yard L yard in Concord, ON. While commissioning a new Knox Kershaw KYC550 Yard Cleaning machine this past Thursday and Friday, I spotted 3054 and RLK 4095 putting their train together a couple of tracks over to the west.

CN 50397 Industrial Brownhoist 250 ton wrecker, s/n 12368 built in 1957. It was originally assigned to the GTW in Battle Creek, MI. according to a July 1960 CN crane roster. It sits here in the cold snow covered Kamloops Yard in January of 2003 nearing the end of its useful life at CN.

The iron fence and shrubs are cleared away, and QNS&L 702 4-6-2 has been cosmetically freshened up for all to see at the passenger station in Sept-Iles, Quebec on this cool, overcast and drizzly late October morning.

Now that we are finally enjoying a hot and humid day, here's a reminder of the nasty winter we just left behind. SOR has brought in a new Knox Kershaw snow fighter from their sister railway Quebec Gatineau to move the massive amounts of accumulated snow and deep drifts along the Nanticoke spur near Jarvis, ON. The main line and yard tracks into the refinery, steel plant and power generating station all required a substantial number of passes to move the snow back from the running rails. During the first clearing attempt, the sides of the machine scraped the sides of the drifts up to cab window level.

[Editors note: Very remote location, few photos of HBRY on site] Ex-CN GP40-2LW 9522 has been patched by Helm Financial and sent to Gillam to keep ex-CN Pointe St. Charles van 79858 company for a while. 9522 is a 1974 built unit while the van is a few years younger with a 1976 birth date.

Who knows what kinds of ghosts and goblins are lurking inside this classic steel caboose that was captured on Halloween at the QNS&L car and locomotive facility in Sept-Iles. The thermo pane windows and dual stoves will certainly help keep this van warm inside during the harsh winter months that are just around the corner.

MECHANICAL TEST CAR (VOITURE D'ESSAIS MECHANIQUE) CP 66 sits on the dead line at the Ogden shop complex waiting its fate along with a plethora of other work service and business cars on this warm July afternoon in 2012. CP business cars Lacombe, Shaughnessy and Assiniboine, baggage cars CP 404910 and CP 404937, sleepers IC&E 2458 Pine Leaf and IC&E 2460 Pine Island (ex-AMTRAK), and freshly painted ex-AMTRAK day coaches CP 103 and 104 were scattered throughout the complex in various stages of repair and disrepair.

CP business car Assiniboine is 'up on stilts' so-to-speak as it waits outside the Ogden Yard car shop for its rebuilt truck assemblies. The relatively fresh exterior paint is already showing signs of pollution stains and will require a good wash before the car goes back into service and receives its first load of executives. The Ogden car shops were catering to at least half-a-dozen business cars in various stages of overhaul during my July 2012 visit.

CN 5319 is connected and ready to move CN 15007 & CN 15008 TEST cars on the Camrose Sub. on this cloudless and bitterly cold November 15th. CN's Engineering crews do a remarkable job of keeping their TEST trains clean and neat as they traverse Canada and the United States on a never ending track inspection program.

Cartier's 'Hart Jaune' is a little weathered but still looks pretty impressive in this November 2006 photo taken outside the huge car and locomotive facility in Port-Cartier. I witnessed quite a variety of unique and 'one-off' MOW equipment and rolling stock at the facility on this visit.

Only minutes out of the car shop and filling the air with the smell of fresh paint, ex-Amtrak day coaches, now numbered CP 103 and CP 104 are positioned on the shop lead to be picked up shortly by a lone yard switcher and taken to points unknown.
