About Paul O'Shell


Started my railroad career at CN in July 1969 and retired from the industry 49 years later on March 1, 2018. My area of expertise was railway Work Equipment. Reside in Kelowna, BC. I use a Nikon D850 full frame & Nikon D7200 (Nikkor 24-70mm, 24-120mm, 35mm, 18-140mm, 55-300mm, & 80-400mm) and scan with an Epson V550. Enjoy my contributions. Be safe. NRE 400-2 ex-CN 30 ton American crane sits quietly at the NRE/ALCO repair shop in Capreol, ON. It is surrounded by a plethora of motive power and car equipment waiting for repair and/or resale.

The only thing that does have a coat of rust on ONR 1600 is the brand new trainline air hose that was just installed. It may look like crap but it was purring like a kitten and ready for its next assignment.

BCR 611 sits on the deadline with a number of siblings on this sunny and warm October afternoon. Fours years into CN's ownership of the provincial railroad and there was still lots of red white and blue power around.

This view of BC Rails catenary inspection van 993804 allows us to look up through the observation windows in the cupola. I sure hope the seat backs reclined, otherwise one would have an awful stiff neck at the end of the run.

This ex-BC Rail van has been brought to CN's Transcona Engineering complex for possible future use with Engineering work trains. It sat amongst a variety of surplus BC Rail, IC and CN equipment at the Work Equipment Repair Facility compound waiting for a determination from a higher authority.

Le St.-Laurent was not sitting far from sister Le Nord-Cotier on this dull and dreary day in Port-Cartier. The bright orange paint on these two vans, a couple of coaches, and an old Wellman crane were the only bright spots in my afternoon of photo gathering.

As she waits for a fresh crew to arrive, CN 4721 nervously eyes the scrap yard on the other side of the wooden fence. Torches spark and grapples toss cut up iron right in front of this tired engines nose.

This CN bulkhead flat has been renumbered for Operations service (Engineering, Mechanical, Transportation) and now sits at the Work Equipment repair facility compound in Transcona with an Equipment Department Pettibone 220 RRC (110 ton capacity) wrecking crane on its deck. I believe the number sequence on the crane indicates it is 'E' equipment department, 'O' owned vehicle, '7' truck, '7' (77) year purchased, '594' sequential vehicle number. This would make a great project for all the modelers out there.

B&B Department Painters boarding car 1523 has housed its last employees. Now on one of the well populated deadlines in ONR's North Bay yard, it waits it fate with so many other pieces of surplus rolling stock.

1803 has seen better days. She now sits skeletonized in the deadline in ONR's North Bay yard. There are still a few parts left on her that will eventually make to other units, such as the rerailers hanging under the frame just ahead of the fuel tank.

CN 50437, an Ohio model DE 400 locomotive crane will be celebrating its 40th birthday next year. Built for CN in 1973, this particular crane has a 2-foot elevated operators cab to improve sightlines into open top railcars to aid in material loading and unloading. The crane sits in the afternoon sun feeling lonely on the day after her long time operator 'Ray' retired from CN.

CP 414216, a 1977 built Ohio model DE 400 locomotive crane sits outside the Work Equipment and Car Repair facility in Revelstoke on this sunny and warm July day. The exterior paint scheme has been slightly modified from CP Work Equipment standards as noted by the large gold Canadian Pacific beaver logo, and the white painted wheel rims, stirrups, and grab irons. At 35 years of age and still active in 2012, this crane is not considered old by locomotive crane standards.

CN 50417 has been repainted in a retro-scheme to honour the crane used in the construction of the Great Slave Lake Railway which began in 1962. This Wellman model DE 400, s/n 4402 locomotive crane was built new in 1962. The crane is unique in that neither the name WELLMAN or OHIO is cast into the counterweight at the back of the crane. Operator Danny MacIlroy has the 50417 in absolutely pristine condition on this beautiful September day.

While it may not look like it, this bunk car was still in service and was a home-on-the-road for members of the TH&B wrecking crew. This coach along with several others were stored 'ready to go' at TH&B's Aberdeen Avenue yard in this mid-1974 photo.

Not long for this world, ex-Penn Central 150 ton wrecking crane CR 50125 has been moved from its former home on the CASO in St. Thomas, ON to the CN Reclamation Yard in London, ON. This former facility on the outskirts of London was one of several such plants on CN's system where 'D-453' tagged rolling stock, wrecks, and other no longer needed equipment was sent to be 'permanently' removed from service. Coulda, shoulda, woulda. Oh how I wish I had taken more and better photos back when this yard was still active.

A birds-eye view of the main line as seen from the operators station of CP's newest KSF940 ballast regulator. With the a/c on high, it is nice and cool in the cab as this motor grader on flanged wheels moves tons of ballast as it grooms the track right after it was surfaced by a MK IV tamper which is just out of sight around the curve ahead.

Cruising around in my brand new 1973 Plymouth Duster I stopped in at the CP/TH&B Aberdeen Yard and caught this 'newer' CP steel caboose sitting by itself at the entrance to the yard. The switch points are well oiled and the weed killer is starting to take affect on these ballast free yard tracks.

Long before underslung generators, electric heat, large windows, step lights, mandatory roller bearings, and digital cameras, I caught this wood sided CP caboose in TH&B's Aberdeen Avenue yard in Hamilton, ON. The van was surrounded by a nice mix of old TH&B/CP and newer CP equipment. Most, if not all of the TH&B stuff would be slowly scrapped over the next few years.
