About Paul O'Shell


Started my railroad career at CN in July 1969 and retired from the industry 49 years later on March 1, 2018. My area of expertise was railway Work Equipment. Reside in Kelowna, BC. I use a Nikon D850 full frame & Nikon D7200 (Nikkor 24-70mm, 24-120mm, 35mm, 18-140mm, 55-300mm, & 80-400mm) and scan with an Epson V550. Enjoy my contributions. Be safe. "If I had a million dollars...." "I would buy me a business car." Now this is the way to travel! CP's #83 'Lacombe' brings up the rear of a 2002 test run of steam engine 2816. The recently painted and polished business car is looking spectacular and is ready to receive high paying guests aboard its luxurious accommodations, however, on this run it is occupied by CP personnel overseeing the maintenance and repairs of the steamer.

Security was in place back in the day as evidenced by the bars at each window of the car. Mail & Express car CN 7815 has been nicely preserved in CN's 1950's paint scheme and is on display at the Alberta Railway Museum on the outskirts of Edmonton.

ONR's 1919 built 160 ton capacity Industrial Brownhoist wrecker s/n 3930 was still in service on this beautiful April morning in 2004, but it wouldn't be too much longer before it became another casualty of modern day wreck cleanup methods. At 85 years old, it has certainly provided a lifetime of service to ONR.

It used to take a lot of men, with a lot of shovels, a lot of hours, to do what this Knox Kershaw KSF940 ballast regulator can do in a matter of minutes. This 2012 version of the KKI machine helps maintain the ballast ahead of and behind the surfacing machine on this CP prairie line. Proper ballast profiling is essential to maintain adequate drainage and a solid track structure.

Built by the Russell Snow Plow Co. of Ridgway, PA. this classic railway single-track plow has been well taken care of over the years. On this hot and sunny July day, it sits cleaned and painted in the Havre St-Pierre yard waiting to be stencilled and for the snow to start flying.

Beauty and the Beast! The beautiful mountains of Golden, BC loom over the Beast which is CP 414503, an Industrial Brownhoist 250 ton wrecking crane. It looked terrible when it arrived in Golden from the east, but Ed and the crew went over it with their fine-toothed comb, made the necessary repairs, detailed it and then gave it the fabulous paint job as seen in this photo. Unfortunately, this and most other big wrecking cranes don't see much service these days due to the quicker response and cleanup times of contract services.

This nose shot of DESX 1127 (ex-CN GMD-1) clearly shows the fresh paint was applied over an unprepared/unsanded body. Note the backlit number boards have been patched over and decals have been applied to display the running number.

As evidenced by the stenciling on the sidewall of the cab, this ex-CN GMD-1 most recently did time at the I.N.C,O, facility in Copper Cliff, ON before being retired once again to a deadline. Here it sits with four of its brothers, all waiting their fate, and hoping for yet another life with a shortline or industrial railroad somewhere.

Cartier #73 sits quietly at the Port Cartier diesel shop where its life as a heavy haul unit has come to an end and it is gradually being picked over for useable parts to keep other roadworthy power up and running. The missing bell and dual beam headlight are the obvious signs that 73 has become a doner.

Not enough snow has fallen on this sunny but brutally cold January day to get these two monsters out of the boiler house stub track in North Bay and make a run down the main line. For the time being, snow clearing duties will be left to the smaller more agile machines like the Knox Kershaw KSF940 snow fighters ONR currently has on-hand.

Weathered to a dull blue, INCO 4438 is all boarded up with no place to go as it sits sandwiched between a couple of other down and out 1st generation diesels on the deadline at ONR's North Bay, ON yard.

Now this will brighten up any dingy wreck site! QNS&L 1200, a Bucyrus Erie 250 ton capacity wrecker sits majestically outside the locomotive & car repair shop in Sept-Iles waiting for its next assisgnment. 1200's twin sits on the other end of the line in Labrador City.

This CP steam generator car has been tagged, but not enough to hide the classic multi-mark logo of years gone by. I hope this car, and the CP 5500 coupled to it are destined for a museum somewhere.

CPR #2 'Killarney', one of many business cars bearing this name, has gone from being a prestigeous office on wheels for former CP brass, to sitting on a stub track in the heart of the Rocky Mountains and used as a dining car for tourists.

In deperate need of a repaint, CN 9169, a GFA-17a series unit sits on display at the PG museum along with several other members of the family. Note that the stripes lean forward towards the cab on this locomotive. Keep an eye out for future photos that show variations of this paint scheme and the direction of the stripes are angled.

This 1962 built American 850-80 DE locomotive crane has had a long hard life at the Wasbush Mines Pointe-Noire complex. Here the machine operator and shop supervisor speak with a representative from the American & Ohio Locomotive Crane Co. about the possibility of acquiring new powered truck assemblies for this work horse.

Riviere Romaine Railways QIT #39 and QIT #38 lead a string of precisely loaded ore cars onto the high line unloading bridge at the port in Havre St-Pierre. Both units are running short hood forward on this warm and hazy second last day of July.

Cartier Railway's highly modified Jordan spreader #X-23 has not been treated too rough since its last major service and paint. The orange and black gloss paint shines nicely in the welcome sunshine on this beautiful end of May day.

Up close and personal with CP's 2816 as she gets a little TLC from one of the crew. The steamer was on a 'shakedown run' heading east to Calgary with a short consist of support cars, crew sleepers and business car Lacombe bringing up the markers.
