About Paul O'Shell


Started my railroad career at CN in July 1969 and retired from the industry 49 years later on March 1, 2018. My area of expertise was railway MoW Work Equipment. Reside in Kelowna, BC. I use a Nikon D850 full frame & Nikon D7200 (Nikkor 24-70mm, 24-120mm, 35mm, 18-140mm, 55-300mm, & 80-400mm) and scan with an Epson V550. Enjoy my contributions. Be safe. <b>Getting out ahead of the freight</b><br>VIA #1 The Canadian departs Jasper ahead of a sizeable freight led by CN 2786 that has yet to be crewed.<br>Directly behind the Park car at the left of the frame sits tomorrow's Skeena destined to Prince Rupert, BC.<br>At the far right is CN 2100 the conductor training locomotive for Jasper yard employees.<br>The yard won't stay empty for long.

<b> Okay to come back 25 more! </b> <br> VIA 001 The Canadian is making its reverse move through CN Snider, ON with the tail end protection person diligently monitoring the movement. <br> This view from inside VIA 88709 Laurentide Park on December 12, 2021 has the pilot, with radio in hand, sitting on the rear corner table, which houses the emergency air brake valve. <br> I'm looking forward to getting back on VIA 001 The Canadian one week from today for another cross-Canada and return trip. :-)

<b> One out, one in </b> <br> CN 3310 and CN 3155 are on the tail end of a westbound freight leaving Jasper, AB on a bitterly cold but sunny late November 2023 morning. <br> As soon as the westbound clears, CN 2815 will notch it up and begin its move across the Hazel Avenue crossing at Mile 0.29 on CN's Albreda Sub. and into the yard. <br> There was no shortage of east and westbound train movements in and out of the yard at Jasper during my three days in town. :-)

<b> Can the scenery get any better? </b> <br> Just when you think you have seen the most beautiful scenery of the trip, the train makes another turn and BOOM another great view presents itself. <br> VIA #2 The Canadian is just 3.5 miles east of Jasper, AB at CN English, AB Mile 232.30 CN Edson Sub. No matter which direction you look you are in awe of the majestic Rocky Mountains, the flowing rivers, and the wildlife grazing along side the tracks. <br> Not a bad way to spend a week. :-)

<b> Plain Jane Budd </b> <br> VIA #186 the Sudbury to White River train has stopped at Mile 88.8 on the CPKC White River Sub. to detrain and entrain passengers going to and coming from the famous Lodge 88 camp which is accessed from this location. <br> There's lots of activity on the ballast shoulder and right-of-way as camp supplies and customers gear is loaded and unloaded from the baggage section of the leading Budd car. <br> The nose of VIA 6250 is as plain as it gets! Basic silver/grey paint, no VIA logo, no reflective striping, no stenciled running number.

<b> All in a winters day work </b> <br> The section guys are out completing their daily winter chores. A freshly cleaned and filled lamp being set atop the switch stand, as the switch points and throw rod get a good clearing of accumulated snow. <br> The hanging wires suggest a heavy wet snow has covered the area which will keep this 3-man crew and foreman quite busy on their territory this cold winter day.

<b> Looks like were gonna need a tunnel </b> <br> A three-day stay in Jasper after a trip on VIA 005 and 006 The Skeena to Prince Rupert and return is over, and I'm now on my way back to Toronto. <br> On an absolutely beautiful afternoon, VIA #2 The Canadian is running at track speed past Mile 220.0 on the CN Edson Sub. between Henry House and Devona, AB on November 28, 2023. <br> The solid rock wall in front of us will send The Canadian through numerous curves and tunnels as it navigates through the majestic Rocky Mountains east of Jasper, AB. <br> Another much appreciated edit by a good friend. :-)

<b> Nature-made and man-made beauties </b> <br> Sitting in the valley below the majestic Rocky mountains in the town of Jasper in Jasper National Park are four man-made majestic monsters. CN 6015 on static display, CN 3230, CN 2257, and CN 5687. <br> No matter where you were in town, there was always a great view of this wonderful natural scenery, as a backdrop to the railroad images we all like to capture. <br> <b> Happy New Year everyone! </b>

<b> Skirting the shore of Burns Lake </b> <br> VIA 005 The Skeena is on its way from Prince George, BC to Prince Rupert, BC on the second day of its northwest trek. Just a mile or so from entering the town of Burns Lake, the locomotive and two-car consist (VIA 8102 coach, and VIA 8707 Kokanee Park) glide smoothly along the shore of the namesake lake. <br> Once again I have the entire Park car to myself for hours at a time on this wonderful journey. :-) <br> Another photo graciously edited by my friend Extra 5610 West.

<b> Rock & Steel </b> <br> Two very imposing sights at CN Henry House, AB Mile 225.8 CN Edson Sub. <br> The Rocky Mountains, and the CN trestle over the Snaring River where it joins the Athabasca River east of Jasper, AB. <br> It was a beautiful afternoon to have the whole dome of VIA 8504 Skyline all to myself. <b> The opposite view </b> <br> Further to my trip last month, and posting showing the dated furnishings in VIA 8707 Kokanee Park on VIA 005 The Skeena, here is a view in the same car looking towards the staircase to the dome level. <br> As in the original CP Canadian Park cars, there are six clocks for Canada's time zones (none of them accurate), a stationary desk for writing a post card, and the hallway leading to the Mural Lounge. <br> What a great car to travel in! :-)
