VIA 907 made it's second appearance on train 72 today wearing the "Canada 150" wrap. It was also on 72 on Tuesday, but received a bath between runs and looked more presentable today.

Municipalities receive complaints from the public all day long; anything from their garbage not getting picked up, to burnt out streetlights, to the noise that trains make in the rail yard. The first question most would ask is “Did you not see the rail yard when you were considering buying the house?" It MIGHT be a tad disruptive for the residents of Usher Street when an SD40-2 idles outside their bedroom windows for half the night, so I SOMEWHAT sympathise for them. Somewhat. RLHH 3403 was set off by 597 in the night, and would be taken down to Hamilton by 596 after they switched Ingenia.

For a shot I had not intended to take, it came out pretty good. I managed to cross paths with this train three times in my travels for work today, this being the third. While driving on Grey Street I happened to see a bright orange thing out of the corner of my eye. I had figured RLHH 496 was long gone, but I managed to get to the end of George Street and jump out for a quick shot as 496 backed in to the CN yard with RLHH 2081, four hoppers from Ingenia and NECR 3840 shoving.

CN 4713 is arguably the best looking locomotive still in "zebra stripes" remaining on the active roster. It was oddly repainted in the old scheme in 2007, long after the mid-nineties CN North America paint scheme, and the switch back to the CN "noodle" scheme. 4713 has been assigned to 580 for the past couple of weeks, and the unit was nicely posed in the yard today while the crew took a lunch break.

Montreal, Maine and Atlantic started up on January 9, 2003. For start up power, they acquired 16 B39-8Es from General Electric. They came through Southern Ontario in two batches of 8 on CN 236 on December 7 & 8, 2002. The attached photo shows the 2nd batch on December 8, cut off from the train to make a lift at Aldershot. Also in the consist were GECX 3000 and 3001, which were C30-S7 "Super-7" demos. They did not stay on the MMA, and ended up in Brazil on the MRSL.

GECX 8592 became MMA 8592, and was one of two B39-8E to be repainted in the MMA maroon/gold scheme. The repainting came as a result of 8592 nailing a truck in Hampden, ME while on the Searsport Local and ending up in the ditch. The collision occurred April 11, 2006.

After the MMA bankruptcy, I don't know where 8592 ended up.

Originally built as Maine Central 258, Ottawa Valley Railway 2000 is shown sitting in Hagersville two months after start up of Southern Ontario Railway's operation on the Hagersville Subdivision. The unit wears the colours of the failed New Hampshire & Vermont. I don't know how long TOR 2000 was in Ontario, I believe it was brief, as it was likely shipped off to Alberta for the start-up of the Mackenzie Northern Railway in 1998. It was there that the unit became RLK 3873. The GP38 ultimately found its way back to the Southern Ontario Railway, operating as RLK 3873 for many years. It outlived Rail America, retaining the RaiLink blue/white scheme and then was neatly patched when Genesee & Wyoming purchased Rail America. G&W shipped out RLK 3873 for rebuild, and the unit returned to home rails 2016-10-27 as a GP38-2 dressed in G&W corporate orange and black, and renumbered again as RLHH 2081. There can't be too many locomotives to work for the same railroad having three distinctly different reporting marks, number, and paint scheme!

OSRX 6508 and 1620 have left most of their train east of the connection track to CN, and are heading west with five covered hoppers that they lifted in Beachville and will soon drop them at the customer in Putnam.

Now kids, today's lesson is all about the SD40-2... The boys take a break from throwing rocks at a dead tree to watch RLHH 595 switch out tank cars at Garnet. The crew came on duty much later than usual (after noon) so we had lots of time to kill before seeing the "orange train" in action.

CN ET44AC 3056, about a month old, leads CN 382 through Brantford on the north track. Just behind me, VIA 72 was stopped at the station on the south track, and CN 580 was in the yard waiting for 382 to clear before they backed out on to the north track and headed back to London where they are now based.

Hot times on the high iron this is not. A Sperry truck is stopped on the south track adjacent to the CN office while a few employees take care of business inside. Passing on the north track is a Loram rail grinder. Not exactly what gets me excited, but having the two pieces of equipment side by side on the main was somewhat interesting.

I finally managed to get a decent photograph of RLHH 3049 after over a year of RLHH serving Ingenia on what is left of the Burford Spur and TH&B in Brantford. RLHH 3049 is shown shoving six hoppers just east of Eagle Avenue, passing what was once TH&B's Newport Yard.

It saddens me to inform the railfan community that in a few minutes after this photograph was taken, I missed the highly sought after "over/under" photo with RLHH 496 stopped at Brant Jct. and CN 580 passing overhead on the Hagersville Subdivision returning from Cainsville. Missed it by seconds.

The waiting game. A late-running RLHH 595 is only getting later while they wait in the clear for CN 144 to pass. Poor 580 is trapped in the yard, waiting for RLHH 595 to finish putting their train together and depart the yard so they too can head out to Normerica to start their work for the day.

Ingenia Polymers (the owner of the rail spur) had a paving contractor repair the Mohawk Street crossing last week. They did a great job... so great they even paved in the railway track flangeways. I guess the crew expected a quality job as they stopped before the crossing. The conductor watched from the ground and determined that the asphalt was too compacted in the flangeways for the train to proceed. They ended up backing clear of Cayuga Street to wait for someone to come and clear the flangeways out (the corn broom wasn't going to cut it!)

The last section of Lake Erie & Northern track in Brantford is presently being removed by a contractor. They started removing the track at the S.C. Johnson (west) end, and have made it as far as the old LE&N yard area. It will be interesting to see how far east they go. In happier times, almost six years ago to the day, CN 580 is shown returning from S.C. Johnson with four empties. The train is crossing Leonard Street, and is paralleling Holme Street. Sections of the railway right of way are sought after by developers, and the former Harding Carpet factory (and a former railway customer) will likely be torn down soon to make way for more houses that will front Holme Street. In a few years you probably won't even be able to tell that railway tracks came through this area of Brantford.

Two of the three Helm SDs that Goderich-Exeter had on lease at the time, assisted by a Rail America unit, have just brought a cut of salt hoppers up from the mine and will soon depart for the trip back to Stratford.

WC 6519, WC 6494 (still in BN green), WC 5972 (in full ATSF paint), and WC 6677 sit outside the Algoma Central shop in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. Shortly after the photo was taken the power departed for the yard to put together a northbound train. WC 6677 was one of only a few WC locomotives to receive stripes on the nose rather than the standard pine tree nose design.

The Guelph Junction Turn has arrived at Guelph Junction and is stopped at the office to allow the conductor to go in and get their paper work. Both RS18us were sold to the New Brunswick East Coast, which was then taken over by CN. 1821 was then sold to the Train Touristique Charlevoix. Looks like 1841 was scrapped by CN.

Bright sun, fall colours, and a freshly painted SD40-2W... what more could you ask for? Original number boards, classification lights, and it still has a bell to boot! Not too shabby. CN 5347 is notable as being one of few CN locomotives to grace the rails of the former Bessemer & Lake Erie.

CN 435 with recently repainted CN 8103 leading, passes RLHH 3403 working Brantford Yard. The RLHH was backing up at the time, so the timing worked out pretty good. Thanks for the heads up James, it was a good thing we crossed paths this afternoon.

RLHH 3403 switches the yard in Brantford as it passes CN 4784, the unit presently assigned to CN 580. Thanks for the heads up Joe, it was time for a break any way.
