CN CS-02 switches a cut of cars outside of the car shop in Walker Yard. I believe this was CN's attempt to reduce maintenance on a locomotive by classifying it as car shop equipment. I don't think it lasted too long. I had thought it was ex. CN 1272 but the Trackside Guide says 1272 was retired in 1995 and sold to Canac so I doubt CS-02 is that unit, unless it sat in storage and/or was CS-02 for years.

Another nice brief sunny morning before the clouds rolled in finds 580 switching with GMTX 2277, CN 5273 and CN 2304. After years of watching single CN GP9RMs on 580 I'm loving the variety lately. 580 would soon leave with seven cars for Normerica. They made quick work of that before returning to the yard, grabbing cars for CGC and then heading off to Hagersville.

The first chore of the day for 580's crew is usually sorting out cars for the local industries that they will later switch, and today they were getting cars ready for Normerica (kitty litter), Ingenia (plastics) and Rembos (lumber). It was clear and sunny first thing this morning but the clouds sure rolled in fast. CN 5273 looks pretty good for 44 years old. What I thought was original paint is not, as the unit has been repainted a few times. If you look closely within the "C" on the nose there is the remnant of a smaller "CN" that looks more appropriate on the nose of a standard cab. What's ironic is in the photo I found of the unit taken in 1987 with the small logo you can clearly see a larger "CN" logo through the red paint. So at least the nose/cab has been repainted three times. I find little details like this intriguing.

CP 5626, CP 5703, CP 5590, CP 1103 and CP 6043 lead a southbound train climbing the Niagara escarpment at Vinemount on a beautiful sunny but bitterly cold day. Always a favourite photo of mine, and notable as it was the last day I saw Reg Button before he passed away. I was in a hurry to get here for the shot so I didn't stop to talk to him at Kinnear but at least I got to wave goodbye.

At the end of the conductors strike CN somehow ended up with two sets of power for 580/581 in Brantford. The "old" set with CN 9615, CN 2110, and CN 8955 spent most of the strike parked in Paris. The "new" set arrived overnight, consisting of GMTX 2277, CN 5273 and CN 9416. The 580 crew coming on duty this morning initially appeared confused as to what units to use, checking their paperwork with the unit numbers. They apparently rightfully chose the consist with the GMTX, and at the end of their shift already swapped the units around placing the GMTX in the middle. Hopefully this consist sticks around awhile so I can get a decent shot of CN 5273 leading. For the record this photo was taken from Usher Street over the fence and before I reported to work. Not the greatest conditions for photography but it was a surprise to see so many locomotives in the yard and worthy of a shot.

OSR M-420(W)s 647 and 644 back off the north industrial spur with four hoppers. Their next task was to switch the south industrial spur, however CN 540 was on it. What to do? Walk to Tim Horton's of course. I find Guelph horribly frustrating to navigate and lucked out with this shot. I had abandoned my OSR chase to go search for CN 540... finding CN 542 instead. After photographing 542 at Guelph Jct. I then found 540 on the Fergus Spur. Not finding anywhere to photograph 540 I gave up, got twisted around in the industrial area and found OSR again. You can plan all you want but sometimes the subjects you just happen upon end up being the best photos of the day. It was today!

London & Port Stanley car number 8 departs the Halton County Radial Railway museum at 3:30 p.m. for a short run down to the east end of the line. The car is too large to negotiate the loop tracks at each end of the line, so the ride isn't quite as fun as on one of the street cars. What it lacks in ride it makes up in appearance; the car was built in 1915 by the Jewett Car Company of Newark, Ohio and has been beautifully restored.

The summer months allow for some nice early morning photography from the north side of the yard in Brantford. June 26 was a clear, bright morning and I had a few minutes to spare before heading to work so I swung by the yard and was rewarded with 580 already at work with CN 9675, CN 2444 and CN 5470. Over a month later (July 30) and this consist is still together on 580. Today they were busy with a short ballast train assisting with derailment repairs following the little mishap in Paris last night.

Privately owned GE 70-tonner 1556, leased to the Waterloo Central at the time, is shown departing Waterloo's faux-station for another trip to St. Jacobs. The 1965 diesel looks out of place beside the modern Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics building. Fear not, because this scene has changed dramatically since the photo was taken. The siding the train is on is now gone, and a double-track LRT line curves through here. Waterloo Central no longer runs this far south. The faux-station, built by an earlier attempt at a tourist train operation still stands, and is now a Visitor and Heritage Information Centre. I assume with the arrival of the former OSR S13s on the Waterloo Central old 1556 was no longer needed and was returned to its owner. It is now leased to and behind the fences of Babcock and Wilcox in Cambridge, which apparently has changed their name to BWXT Canada Ltd.

The crew of Ontario Southland's Woodstock Job had a long day today. They started off heading to Tillsonburg to do a few hours of switching before heading to Cami in Ingersoll, and then finally heading to Woodstock to interchange with CP. On their first jaunt of the day, OSRX 6508 and 1401 lead five hoppers at the Hwy. 19 crossing south of Mount Elgin. The F's just don't look right hauling modern graffiti-covered auto racks, so I always enjoy catching them with cars that look like they could be the same vintage! Thankfully the F's are immaculate, those hoppers not so much.

CN 148 is led by a colourful lash-up of CREX 1513 and CEFX 1023 approaching Brantford. 25 days earlier I photographed the same pair on 394 at Hardy Road: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37426 It's pretty impressive if these two have stayed together for most of May.

For the first time CN 580 has 2 six-axle locomotives assigned to it. CN 5470, CN 2444, and CN 9675 lead a hefty cut of drywall loads off the Hagersville Sub. back in to Brantford. It's not the typical local power we're familiar seeing in the telephone city.

NS C93 has completed their switching in Fort Erie and has pulled up to the International Bridge to briefly wait for a signal before returning to the States. NS 3480 was built as BN 7265 and was acquired from NRE in 2012. I didn't notice at the time, but it looks like C93 has a mascot riding the sand fill cap on the nose of the locomotive.

Former CN 9675, now sub-lettered NYC, is the fifth unit on 580 resting in the rain while the crew takes a lunch break. Could this be the first sign of a forthcoming merger between two Hunter Harrison legacy railroads? Will the GP40-2L(W), built new as GO 708, soon wear CSX blue/yellow? Oh the excitement!

Despite some of the GECX leasers being returned, there's still some colour to be found on CN rails. CN 394 is crossing Hardy Road, just west of CN Hardy, with CREX 1513 and CEFX 1023. Being 1:30 p.m. (a late lunch hour for those concerned), I avoided the standard-issue station shot worried that VIA 73 would block 394. 73 ended up being late so I didn't need to venture further afield after all. On a quick glance this looks like a chopped-nose Algoma Central GP7, however it's actually Wisconsin Central GP7L-m 1502, ex. AC 169. The WC took over the AC on February 1, 1995, and apparently they wasted no time getting to work on the remaining GP7L-m on the Algoma Central roster. WC must have been power short, or maybe the paint booth was backed up since this unit was returned to service before getting repainted WC. It is shown here as the 2nd unit on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train at the end of the run in Sault Ste. Marie. The unit was retired in 2005.

IC 2460 leads CN 148 approaching the station in Brantford. I believe this is the only ex. LMS C40-8W with the CN "noodle" on the nose. Rumour is that the tracks in the foreground will soon be rebuilt as additional yard tracks. We're not sure why, but perhaps it'll be a support yard for the new mill / cookie factory under construction just east of CN "Masseys".
