    CN Belleville


   After a fast westbound run on the Kingston Sub, CN Extra* 6060 West pauses in the CN Belleville yard with more than a full head of steam ( * white markers no flags )


The Extra is en route to Toronto via the Kingston, Campbellford and Uxbridge Subdivisions

What's Interesting:


The Technical: Kodachrome ( ASA ) 64 transported by Nikkormat EL with Nikkor 135mm f2.8 telephoto lens 


The Vehicle: 1969 Pontiac Parisienne four door hard top (Oshawa build) Chevy powered 350 cu. in. V-8 with two barrel carb.


The Route: The Campbellford – Uxbridge Subdivisons – 'dark' territory -  back route was a favourite for many 6167 / 6218 excursions. To my knowledge this May 7, 1977 Extra was the only occasion that 6060 rode the Campbellford Subdivision – at the leisurely 40 m.p.h.  speed limit. Stations include Foxboro (mile 6.5), Madoc Jct.(12.2), Anson (mile 19.8 Jct. With Marmora Subdivision), Campbellford (30.9), Hastings (drawbridge at mile 42.0 ( the bridge is still in place)), Keene (53.7), Peterboro (CN spelling; drawbridge at mile 62.1 and interlocking with C.P. Rail at mile 63.0), Omemee (77.8) Lindsay, Manilla, Blackwater, Uxbridge, Goodwood, Stouffville, Markham, Hagerman, Scarborough Junction. 


The Extra: I believe this 6060 trip was a one way CRHA sponsored trip (a re-positioning)  consist included several Montreal open window commuter coaches and a Cafeteria. Perhaps some one out there may recall where this trip originated (Ottawa or Montreal). And how riders returned. Anyway it was mid afternoon, about 13:30 by the time the extra west appeared at Belleville.


The regular scheduled mainline class 1 steam: CN and CP Rail  and your Federal Government introduced the first VIA Timetable effective October 31, 1976 to April 23, 1977, at this time VIA was only a marketing campaign, each railway's passenger operations continued as independent divisions within CN and CP Rail – by 1978 CN passenger operations would be managed from the new VIA office – this would a profound impact on the CN Steam Program: summer 1978 VIA CN Timetable was the final year of the regular scheduled 6060 operation, appeared in the VIA CN 1977 and VIA CN 1978 Timetables ( and CN Timetables 1975 1976): 6060 Toronto – Niagara Falls ( and return) every Sunday and Wednesday months of July and August only.

  1. That would have been tremendous rolling thru the Campbellford Sub. It was hard enough to catch anything moving, let alone this beauty.

  2. I was on a similar trip from Montreal to Toronto but that was on May 14, 77,we were supposed to be in Toronto at 6pm but were delayed 2hrs at Belleville and detoured through Campbellford Peterborough and Lindsay and made it to Union station at Midnight…

  3. Recall a discussion with the CN Brakeman on a 6218 trip over the Campbellford, all CN freight to / from Peterboro were night runs, both on the Campbellford ( Belleville end) and Uxbridge. In fact, prior to SLR ownership I would wack evening golf balls at the Midland Ave driving range that over looked the Scarborough Junction yard while the Uxbridge Sub local made up its train – usually three green and gold GMD 1′s ( 1000 series ). And wait until the train shoved westward across Midland and St.Clair Avenue (at Scarborough GO) crossings to access the Uxbridge. From time to time I would follow the GMD1′s progress northward at the Danforth Road, Eglinton, Lawrence crossings.

    I bet many of the passengers didn’t mind though…
