Caption: Having arrived from Winnipeg on yesterday's 317, retired GMD1u 1423 sits on the west side of the Walker Yard diesel shop accompanied by a Test Car, SW1200RS 1375? (retired in 2006), GP9rm 7001 (retired in 2009), SD38-2 1653, and SD40u 6012. 1423 was the first GMD1 built (number 1000, in 1958). Its last assignment was in Prince George in March 2001 before being used at CN's Transcona training centre. At this time, I don't know why the 1423 is "on the move".

Correction–last assignment Prince George, March 2021
The last GMD-1 used in revenue freight service was likely 1437 as it was used in April 2021 on CN trains in Kitchener when it was being donated (it was not supposed to be used! but CN crew didn’t know any better)
But this one was likely the last in service as it was used for training for a few years. My understanding is they basically went up and down the track with trainees aboard, but can’t quite confirm what they did with it. Winnipeg folks would know better or former Trainees.
Last CN train 1437 was used on in revenue service was on L566 to Elmira.
Interesting CN 7001 is still around after being retired so long ago.
I just snapped much of that string of retired power from the Skyline car on VIA 001 on August 1, 2025. The SW1200 is stenciled with road number CN 1379 GR12-y.
Thanks for the correction, Paul. According to the Trackside Guide, the 1379 was retired in 1999, later assigned number CS02, then reassigned the number 1379 again. P.S. The 1423 departed Edmonton on the 10th and–as this is written–is making its way to the Lower Mainland.
