Its early spring and a nice day as a southbound GEXR salt train powers up as it leaves Goderich for Stratford. Although this image is but 20 years old, times have certainly changed on the railroad. For one thing, all the power has long departed. Seen are GEXR 4019, 4161, 3834, 177 and Georgia Southwestern 2127. The scene is on approach to popular Black's Point Rd, a shortcut to a nice swimming beach from Hwy 8 to the lake. At least it used to be. High water has killed many beaches along Lake Huron this year.
Disposal of power...4019 to OVR 2009, 4161 (slug)scrapped 2008, 3834 (slug-mother)scrapped 2013, 177 scrapped 2008 and the GSWR 2127, which in this image looks like it is carrying the load, scrapped 2008.

  1. Great classic GEXR image! 4019 was very common when I started shooting GEXR. It used to frequent on 431/432 in the 2000s.

  2. Always a pleasure Mr Mooney. So the entire roster in this shot has gone to the gravesite?

  3. Thanks. The CTG shows this leader, 4019, ending up in Texas, but I don’t know if it is still active. The others, yes, they are gone.

  4. Now that’s how I remember GEXR the best! Miss all those units now.

  5. I believe 4019 was to be rebuilt into some kind of Genset. Maybe it never happened.

  6. I’ve no idea what happened with the 4019 after it went down to that DGNO; Dallas, Garfield and Northeastern (or something like that)It could have ended up anywhere.
I do agree this image is how I remember the GEXR “at its finest” as well. A lot of fun for us guys. You just never knew what they had scrounged up for power on most trains.

  7. It seems like a lot of power. Maybe delivering units but the rear one 2127 is it? is giving the smoke show so it looks to be active and online in this consist.

  8. Great shot Arnold! In 1999 GEXR 177 and GSWR 2127 even found their way on the Guelph Subdivision after the CN takeover. Both saw brief service out of Kitchener as well. I believe that Marcus has a shot of 2127 at Kitchener by the former CN caboose.
